Currently reading Milk Run by Nathan Lowell, the first in his Smuggler's Tales story arc, still set in the Solar Clipper universe. This is a re-read for me, as I'm working my way through his Solar Clipper books, this time as audio books. (Except for the two most recent, including this one, which aren't yet in audio format. Yet.)

Also listening to We Are Legion by Dennis E. Taylor. This was a book I picked up at an Audible 2 for 1 sale, and it's actually turning out quite promising. Let's hope it holds as I get further into it.

Next up: On the Wrong Track by Steve Hockensmith. Coyboys applying Holmes' methods. Second in the series. I hope this is as much fun as the first.

I'll certainly consider any of her books that come up on offer.
Her entire "October Daye" series - ten novels plus several shorts - is in the Hugo packet this year, which is free with a WorldCon supporting membership and contains most of the Hugo Award nominees. The asterisk for that series in particular, which does not apply to the other contents of the packet, is that it's delivered through NetGalley as a time-limited EPUB omnibus. (The rest of the packet is available usually in all three major formats - PDF, MOBI, EPUB - without DRM.)

I can personally recommend just about everything ELSE McGuire (aka Mira Grant) has written, but I haven't gotten to the Daye books yet.

Huge divergence - listened to an excellent reading of James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. It was a joy to listen to an Irishman read the text. Alas, I rated this a 2/5 when I had to read it in college. It has really only climbed to a 2.5. I had hoped that having a few decades on my first reading might improve my thoughts. But I still did not care for the all-male navel-gazing about Catholic guilt.

Gee, I can't imagine why not. Some books just don't age that well, others, even though they have elements that would be unacceptable to me if written today, don't really bother me knowing the context of the times. Mostly it depends on how pernicious it is.

Not finished yet, but definitely enjoying this re-read.

Not staying as compelling as it started, though I'm far from wanting to abandon it yet. I'm just not trying to sneak times to listen to it.

Read two short stories this morning while my students were completing a mock exam:

Jules Verne's "In the Year 2889" (which many folks now believe was written by his son.

and

Daniel Defoe's "The Apparition of Mrs. Veal"

Which it was. I look forward to getting some more of these in the future.

Next up: Some classic SF, Ring Around the Sun by Clifford D. Simak

I started Uprooted, which I'm enjoying so far.

The opening paragraph caught my eye,

Quote:
“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”

Finished No Middle Name by Lee Child, a bunch of Jack Reacher short stories. Some I had previously read (and skipped this time). Very enjoyable.

And for you Jack Reacher fans, don't forget to recommend the upcoming novel The Midnight Line at FLP and BPL.

Still working on The Oxford Book of Japanese Short Stories.

Finally finished Keigo Higashino's Under a Midnight Sun.

Started listening to Ron Rash's Serena. I understand that the film adaptation was poor, which is sad. I think Jennifer Lawrence would have torn this role apart.
