Queen of Angels by Greg Bear discounted today

Queen of Angels is on sale today at Amazon US. The various posts I've gotten show it at $1.99. but when I go there I see $1.13. If I hadn't already gotten it, I'd jump on it immediately....

Quote:
Hugo Award Finalist: A near-future novel of artificial intelligence, human nature, and mass murder that “succeeds on virtually every level” (The New York Times Book Review).

In Los Angeles in 2047, advances in the science of psychology have made crime a rare occurrence. So it’s utterly shocking when eight bodies are detected in an apartment, and not long afterward the perpetrator is revealed as well: noted poet Emmanuel Goldsmith. The LAPD’s Mary Choy—who has had both her appearance and her police work enhanced by nanotechnology—is tasked with arresting the killer, while psychotherapy pioneer Martin Burke prepares to explore his mind. Meanwhile, Goldsmith’s good friend and fellow writer reels at the news—while, far from all of them, a space probe makes a startling discovery.

This “excellent” novel about technology, identity, and the nature of consciousness is a thought-provoking stunner by the Nebula Award–winning author of the Eon series and the Forerunner Saga (Chicago Tribune).

Shatterday by HARLAN ELLISON is also showing $1.99 in the Early Birds Books mailing, but $1.13 when I went to buy it. I'm not going to argue with them to accept more money, but it is strange.

Quote:
“One of the great living American short story writers” exposes the darkness of the human heart in these speculative tales of terror and tragedy (The Washington Post Book World).

A five-year-old boy never ages, living as an immortal in a past that no longer exists while the world encroaches upon his innocence, in the Hugo and Nebula Award–winning “Jeffty is Five.”

An alien attack leaves Earth on the brink of Armageddon, as humans find themselves unable to resist the sexual allure of their invaders in “How’s the Night Life on Cissalda?”

In the Nebula Award–nominated “Shatterday” (subsequently adapted into the pilot episode of the second Twilight Zone series), a man fights for his life against a relentless enemy who knows his darkest secrets—his own doppelganger.

In these and other thought-provoking stories, legendary author Harlan Ellison dissects the primal fears and inherent frailties common to all people and gives voice to the thoughts and feelings human beings bury deep within their souls. Unflinching and unapologetic, Ellison depicts men and women in all their ugliness and beauty, and humanity in all its fury and glory.

Stories include “Introduction: Mortal Dreads,” “Jeffty Is Five,” “How’s the Night Life on Cissalda?,” “Flop Sweat,” “Would You Do it For a Penny?” (written in collaboration with Haskell Barkin), “The Man Who Was Heavily Into Revenge,” “Shoppe Keeper,” “All the Lies That Are My Life,” “Django,” “Count the Clock That Tells the Time,” “In the Fourth Year of the War,” “Alive and Well on a Friendless Voyage,” “All the Birds Come Home to Roost,” “Opium,” “The Other Eye of Polyphemus,” “The Executioner of the Malformed Children,” and “Shatterday.”

Bargain @ $1.99 in Canada & the US from Open Road Media (couponable/VIP-eligible at Kobo; prices should be the same in the usual other stores):

The Door in the Hedge and Other Stories by World Fantasy Award & Mythopoeic Prize-winning author Robin McKinley (ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE), a collection of her fairy tales both original and retold, originally out in 1981 from HarperCollins Greenwillow YA imprint and later picked up by Ace Books.

Ensorcelled princesses . . . a frog that speaks . . . a magical hind—Newbery Medal winner Robin McKinley opens a door into an enchanted world in this collection of original and retold fairy tales

The last mortal kingdom before the unmeasured sweep of Faerieland begins has at best held an uneasy truce with its unpredictable neighbor. There is nothing to show a boundary, at least on the mortal side of it; and if any ordinary human creature ever saw a faerie—or at any rate recognized one—it was never mentioned; but the existence of the boundary and of faeries beyond it is never in doubt either.

So begins “The Stolen Princess,” the first story of this collection, about the meeting between the human princess Linadel and the faerie prince Donathor. “The Princess and the Frog” concerns Rana and her unexpected alliance with a small, green, flipper-footed denizen of a pond in the palace gardens. “The Hunting of the Hind” tells of a princess who has bewitched her beloved brother, hoping to beg some magic of cure, for her brother is dying, and the last tale is a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses in which an old soldier discovers, with a little help from a lavender-eyed witch, the surprising truth about where the princesses dance their shoes to tatters every night.

I'm slowly reading my way through the first season but be warned it's an expensive way to buy. Even the collections (there's now a second season available) are expensive. I've enjoyed what I've read so far and must dig out my DTEs of the original Tremontaine books to read when I've finished. I will say it's been a good read for the commute.

The three titles in the The Fall of the Gas-Lit Empire series by Rod Duncan have dropped to $1.99/$2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I debated a little while about where to list these - Kindle puts them in mystery, but the descriptions feel more like fantasy/alternate history, the blurbs say to list them under fantasy, and SYKM doesn't list this series, although they do list some of Duncan's other titles. Oh, and the first one says it was a finalist for the Philip K Dick award, and not for the Edgar, Agatha, or Anthony, so I went for putting them here and will put a cross-post in the mystery thread.

The Bullet-Catcher's Daughter, #1, $1.99
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Bullet-Catche...dp/B00IQQUYTW/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...her-s-daughter
Spoiler:
Quote:
Finalist for the 2014 Phillip K. Dick Award

Elizabeth Barnabus lives a double life – as herself and as her brother, the private detective. She is trying to solve the mystery of a disappearing aristocrat and a hoard of arcane machines. In her way stand the rogues, freaks and self-proclaimed alchemists of a travelling circus.

But when she comes up against an agent of the all-powerful Patent Office, her life and the course of history will begin to change. And not necessarily for the better…

File Under: Fantasy

Unseemly Science, #2, $1.99
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Unseemly-Scie...dp/B00MDHLPDE/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/unseemly-science
Spoiler:
Quote:
In the divided land of England, Elizabeth Barnabus has been living a double life - as both herself and as her brother, the private detective. Witnessing the hanging of Alice Carter, the false duchess, Elizabeth resolves to throw the Bullet Catcher's Handbook into the fire, and forget her past. If only it were that easy!

There is a new charitable organisation in town, run by some highly respectable women. But something doesn't feel right to Elizabeth. Perhaps it is time for her fictional brother to come out of retirement for one last case...? Her unstoppable curiosity leads her to a dark world of body-snatching, unseemly experimentation, politics and scandal. Never was it harder for a woman in a man's world...

File Under: Fantasy

The Custodian of Marvels, #3, $2.99
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Custodian-Mar...dp/B00X2E2MAC/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...ian-of-marvels
Spoiler:
Quote:
You’d have to be mad to steal from the feared International Patent Office. But that’s what Elizabeth Barnabus is about to try. A one-time enemy from the circus has persuaded her to attempt a heist that will be the ultimate conjuring trick.

Hidden in the vaults of the Patent Court in London lie secrets that could shake the very pillars of the Gas-Lit Empire. All that stands in Elizabeth’s way are the agents of the Patent Office, a Duke’s private army and the mysterious Custodian of Marvels.

Rod Duncan returns with the climactic volume ofThe Fall of the Gas-Lit Empire, the breathtaking alternate history series that began with the Philip K. Dick Award-nominated The Bullet-Catcher’s Daughter.

Bargain @ $1.99 in the US only from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Mariner Books imprint, probably just until tomorrow, since HMH tends to rotate their sale offerings monthly (should be the same price at the usual other retailers):

The Crack in Space by the late Philip K. Dick (ISFDB, Wikipedia), his vintage parallel universe science fiction novel originally out in 1966 from Ace Books. ISFDB notes that the story is apparently an expansion of something called “Cantata 140”.

When a repairman accidentally discovers a parallel universe, everyone sees it as an opportunity, whether as a way to ease Earth’s overcrowding, set up a personal kingdom, or hide an inconvenient mistress. But when a civilization is found already living there, the people on this side of the crack are sent scrambling to discover their motives. Will these parallel humans come in peace, or are they just as corrupt and ill-intentioned as the people of this world?

Empire of the One
(Wine of the Gods Book 14) by Pam Uphoff

They crossed the dimensions to infiltrate another world and found it preparing for invasion and war. Can they use this strange world's social conventions to derail the invasion ?

I really enjoyed reading this one - both the old and new characters - all of which appear in later books
