It is. One of the findings in Micro-Sparc v. Amtype is that ownership of a legitimate copy of a work does not entitle you to copies made from a different legitimate copy of that work.

I also add that, IF the headline of this thread were true, and the developers of Mp3 still held the rights to it, and actually "killed it" by refusing to license it, so that it started to fall out of favor with device manufacturers, making it sort of obsolete in it's role as a ubiquitous, popular format (as in, it goes the way of way of WordPerfect documents or LIT ebooks) then, yes, FLAC would be more obsolescence-resistant, since it's open and free. That, plus the fact that it's lossless, and already pretty popular and widely supported, would make it clearly better choice.

But in the real world, it's all about what ratinox said above.

That's whatever you used for the rip. It's easy to split FLAC album files into track files if you have CUE sheets (which is why I have CUE sheets). I use cuetools and shntool for this but foobar2000 can do it easily, too, if you prefer the GUI.

I'm still not understanding the value of the one-big-file + cue sheet vs. ripping individual tracks. At least not since gapless playblack became the norm. Rock operas, and continuous symphony-type stuff all playback smoothly, so why introduce the extra steps to be able to grab a track and make a mix?

Because gapless playback breaks for albums with a mix of gaps and no gaps between tracks.

That has not been my experience. Maybe it's the ripping software I've used, or my devices, but either the track has silence at the end (or beginning) representing the gap between tracks, or the track has no silence if there was no gap.
Before gapless playback, a gap would be introduced between mp3 files no matter what (or they'd be artificially transitioned together in an ugly mess) but I haven't had that problem in a long while.

However, if it still happens for people, then I understand the reason.
But it still seems like a lot of work, if grabbing individual tracks is one's main use pattern. Myself, I think I'd probably still rip tracks, then only go back and re-rip particular albums that needed the precise cueing.

Plus, do all players that support FLAC support cue sheets?

That would be "lossproof."

"Lossless" just means you'll lose them less often.

Lossless means the original bit are not going to be changed. So you can compress to FLAC and decompress from FLAC and all the bit will be there. Meaning the bits ripped from the CD won't be lost.

Yes, well, I have. And it bothers me to no end.

No, but it's not necessary. What's important is that tools exist to convert, split, transcode or otherwise manipulate the master library into to what any given player does support.

One of the nice things about Canadian copyright law: format-shifting is explicitly protected. As long as it's for personal use I can rip my CDs to FLAC then convert them to anything, all perfectly within the law. Similarly, I'm allowed to rip a DVD to put it on my tablet.

Interesting. In the US it would be legal to make a "backup" except that circumventing the copy protection to make said backup in illegal. I though Canada was the same.

You sure that's been settled? I don't think it has.

No, the latter is not allowed if the DVD is encrypted (which almost all are). You are not allowed to circumvent any digital locks. The government has said that they wouldn't prosecute anyone who did it for personal use, but they still steadfastly refused to change the law before enacting it. So, there's still time for an international treaty to force the government into enforcing the law. That whole process leading up to the law smelled fishy.

No, it's not. And in fact because it's not is the reason why Canada is frequently listed near the annual Special 301 Report.
Edit: that is, unless Canada has finally submitted to US demands to pass DMCA-style legislation?
