Beware! Once you issue this command you can never take it off from the todo . If utdoesnt then you have to transfer itmanually ,but before that just make sure that jb survives that update. B.Baalaji |

What it is escapes me at the moment but there really was a reason. It was not an arbitrary choice. Edit: Now I recall, the PW-2 devices sold in China will brick if you try to install any 5.6.x series firmware using the factory production line test firmware builds. Same with the PW-3, which is why we pulled the 5.6.x series for that device also. Last edited by knc1; 05-23-2017 at 10:55 AM. |

Even though my motto is "Newer isn't always better!", there are good reasons not to use deliberately very outdated firmware versions for Kindles. Newer ones have some new features which surely do make sense - despite of lots of bugfixes...
A good tradeoff in my opinion is to use fw 5.8.7.0.1: This is the last one that gives you the chance to downgrade to the initial factory fw, but OTOH it already contains the new Amber font, and it is relatively bug-free. ![]() |

![]() The one and only topic in this thread is software jailbreaking touch kindles. This is only possible if the given device isn't already on a fw version 5.8.8 and up. E.g. I've bought my KT3 running on 5.8.0 (the consumer version of course, not the special factory build). As I've heard, they're "out of the box" now on 5.8.2 or so generally if bought in electronic marts. If bought via Amazon or more specifically in the case of "refurbished" devices at a discount price, they're often on 5.8.7.0.1 - and this is still fine, because below 5.8.8. Then you downgrade to the special initial factory testing fw: in the case of KT3 to "5.8.0 initial" (this has a lower build version than the production fw!) and can do the jailbreak via ;installHtml command and install the hotfix. After that you may upgrade to any newer official fw, even to the very latest 5.8.9.2. This is up to your decision. In principle you might also stay on the very early factory test version if you don't neeed any new features, but like still to have the very special internal semicolon-commands present only in these test builds. But you could also upgrade to 5.8.7.0.1 (irrespective of the primarily installed version, which, BTW, completely has gone via the mentioned first downgrade to the test build) to be able to still again make the downgrade. Or you say: "No, I'd like to have the very, very latest firmware running!" and upgrade to 5.8.9.2 - the jailbreak will survive. And this will also be true for all and any version between the initial version number to the latest. If, in the case of a KT3, one says "I'd like to run fw 5.8.5 and no version later" productively after jailbreaking, he's free to do so. |

One more nit to mention -
The jailbreak survives if you have to switch the Kindle to "Demo Mode" to downgrade it and then switch it back to "User Mode" to upgrade it. Been there, done that (and was the second to write it up). But I don't think anyone has tried that route with 5.8.8 or 5.8.9 (yet). If someone wants to possible waste a Kindle, tell us what happens (in your own thread). At least mention the color of the smoke. |
