Quote:
The President assigns Noon to bodyguard beloved American diplomat Henry Hallmark as he crosses the Atlantic on the S.S. Francesca. Once again, Noon is flung among a passenger list of strange, incredible people, like Hallmark’s dotty wife, and Gilda Tiger, the Most Beautiful Woman in the World, with her mammoth Japanese bodyguard Buddha. The final solution is what Noon has to do to Hallmark at the climax of this bizarre assignment, taking place at a London airport, and a plane bearing Hallmark heading for Eternity. This makes for the saddest choice of Noon’s career.

You're welcome, and Apache!

That's 21 down, 9 to go I think.

Strange business model, but as they keep giving them away it must be doing something for them.

Full Dark House is the first in the Peculiar Crimes Unit/Bryant & May series by Christopher Fowler. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Full-Dark-Hou...dp/B000FC1QNI/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Edgy, suspenseful, and darkly comic, here is the first novel in a riveting mystery series starring two cranky but brilliant old detectives whose lifelong friendship was forged solving crimes for the London Police Department's Peculiar Crimes Unit. In Full Dark House, Christopher Fowler tells the story of both their first and last case—and how along the way the unlikely pair of crime fighters changed the face of detection.

A present-day bombing rips through London and claims the life of eighty-year-old detective Arthur Bryant. For his partner John May, it means the end of a partnership that lasted over half-a-century and an eerie echo back to the Blitz of World War II when they first met. Desperately searching for clues to the killer's identity, May finds his old friend's notes of their very first case and becomes convinced that the past has returned...with a killing vengeance.

It begins when a dancer in a risque new production of Orpheus in Hell is found without her feet. Suddenly, the young detectives are plunged in a bizarre gothic mystery that will push them to their limits—and beyond. For in a city shaken by war, a faceless killer is stalking London's theaters, creating his own kind of sinister drama. And it will take Arthur Bryant's unorthodox techniques and John May's dogged police work to catch a criminal whose ability to escape detection seems almost supernatural--a murderer who even decades later seems to have claimed the life of one of them...and is ready to claim the other.

Filled with startling twists, unforgettable characters, and a mystery that will keep you guessing, Full Dark House is a witty, heartbreaking, and all-too-human thriller about the hunt for an inhuman killer.

For those that haven't met them, these books are quite different from anything else I've seen put up on this thread. Not hard-boiled, not cosy, not soft, no serial killers - how to describe them?? I've read the series (up to no 10) and thoroughly enjoyed them, but wouldn't be at all surprised if half of those who contribute here hated them, They're quirky, mysterious (even by mystery standards!!) and different.

I got one of the series on a Kindle Deal a while back, but they tend not to appear as deals on the UK store. We seem to get mostly chick lit or family sagas

For my part I'd say they are worth buying on a deal, but not necessarily full price. They're police procedurals but more Dixon of Dock Green than Hill Street Blues, i.e. cosy not hard boiled but with a distinct weird flavour to them. If you want the weirdness (urban fantasy) ramped up a bit, Ben Aaronvitch's Rivers of London London series is very good (and they seem to turn up quite frequently on deals), although be warned you may need to get a lexicon of British cop slang.

"Renewing" the cross-post - some more Open Road price drops to $0.99, some new and some I've seen at $0.99 before. Links in the original thread still work.

  • Christianna Brand
  • Charlotte MacLeod
  • Patricia Wentworth
  • Harry Kemelman
  • J. Michael Orenduff
and others...

The original links in the thread (three up top for mysteries, romance and non-fic, and one a few posts down for sci-fi) still work to pull up a mixture of Open Road's PD titles and the $0.99 sale titles.

The links are not perfect - what genre a title is listed under can be odd at times. So what I tend to do is to find an author with some sale titles, then go to that author's Kindle page and sort by price to see everything by that author at $0.99. This time around there aren't a lot (typically 3 - 6 or so) by any one author, unlike the other recent Open Road $0.99 sale or the pre-holiday Open Road freebie bonanza, where there were long lists for some authors.

And many of these have been on sale before, but I still managed to fill in a few holes...

I've read a lot of them and agree - they are sort of cosy, sort of police procedural... Recommended if you like quirky characters. The police department internal memos at the beginning of many of the books crack me up.

The only one I didn't like was Seventy-Seven Clocks as the story was too far-fetched. I think they are best read in order as relationships between the characters grow over time. There was one book where I knew who the killer was from the beginning, but many of them kept me guessing.

The Key is the eighth in the Miss Silver series by Patricia Wentworth. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US (couponable/VIPable).

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Key-Miss-Silv...dp/B0057T4N9I/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-key-13

Spoiler:
Quote:
The murder of a government scientist demands the attention of Miss Silver
Michael Harsch’s life has never been easy. A German Jew, he fled his country when Hitler came to power, escaping the concentration camps by the skin of his teeth. His wife and daughter were not so lucky, and he vowed revenge on the Fuhrer through science. He set to work on a marvelous new explosive that, in the hands of the British army, could silence the German guns forever. But on the eve of his great triumph, the scientist is struck down.

The government asks Miss Silver, the dowdy detective, to help solve the murder and recover the valuable explosive. Was Harsch killed by a half-mad opponent to the war effort, or was it one of Hitler’s undercover agents who pulled the trigger?

Coconut Cowboy is the 19th in the Serge Storms series by Tim Dorsey. It is $1.99 as part of the US Kindle daily deal today.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Coconut-Cowbo...dp/B00X3LOXY2/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Channeling his inner Easy Rider, Serge Storms saddles up for his most epic, lethal, and hilarious road trip ever as he revvs off to find the lost American Dream . . . starting in the Florida Panhandle.

Obsessed with the iconic Sixties classic Easy Rider, encyclopedic Floridaphile, lovable serial killer, and movie buff extraordinaire Serge A. Storms devises his wildest plan yet: finish the journey begun by his freewheeling heroes, Captain America and Billy, tragically cut short by some shotgun-wielding rednecks.

Setting a course for the Florida panhandle, Captain Serge—with Coleman literally riding shotgun—mounts his classic motorcycle and hits the highway in search of the real America: the apple-pie-eating, freedom-swilling moms and pops of Main Street USA.

But the America he finds in the rural burgs dotting the neck of the peninsula is a little bit different . . . and a whole lot weirder than anything Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper encountered. In a state where criminal politicians are more common than gators, Serge and Coleman discover one particular speed-trap locale so aggressively inept at corruption that investigators are baffled where to start.

Expect nothing less than madness, mayhem, ingenious homicides, and mind-altering pharmaceuticals when Serge and Coleman’s path intersects with the Sunshine State’s hyper-dysfunctional rusticity.

Where’s Jack Nicholson when you need him?
