One good thing was my other neighbor came home early, so I don't need to walk her doggies. Oh, and one cute story a neighbor related to me yesterday. She was talking with friends in Kansas, and they were complaining about computer problems to her. She told them that she never has any problems anymore. She just "calls Ricky and Ricky runs right over and fixes it ... and she actually LIKES doing it!!" She said they are getting ready to pack and move here based on just that. And, I do like doing this stuff. It's just that, when my back is screwed up as it is now, I just hate crawling around under desks and behind furniture, whacking my head and mushing my back even more. I think I'm just going to go to bed super early tonight, and watch some movies or something. With a couple of cans of soda pop and some cookies and chocolate, and a little morphine for the back (I wish!!).

The proper reply to both questions is that the service has been offshored, and you are waiting for a person to be flown in from xxxx. | |

Ricky, I think it would still be within the bounds of being a good neighbor to ask the guy to get the computer out from under the desk, as your back is bothering you. Just say "I'm not supposed to go under desks right now" or something like that. I only mention this because your back probably won't be that much better when the RAM arrives. (Yes, I've had to cover the difference between RAM and disk space many, many times, especially when I was teaching computer classes for a living. I used to liken it to the difference between space in your office shelves, drawers, etc, and how much space you have on your desk to actually work, but now the word "desktop" has come into the language to mean the part of the screen littered with icons, so I'm not sure that would work anymore.) I've never been able to see the attraction of Twitter. Maybe I'm too paranoid, maybe my self-esteem is too low, but why would anyone want constant little updates of what I'm doing all the time? I'm amazed that anyone reads my posts here, and at least here they're sort of part of a conversation. |

I shall remember that for next time (as I am certain there will be one) --- From my current job (may have posted this before ) - one very wet server sitting on a very wet floor (the allegedly-disconnected air con had dumped a load of water over it). Call the manufacturers to get an engineer out with enough bits so we can try and get a duplicate server built. 1st line support person asks me what happens when I turn it on. I explain about the water. They ask me if it beeps when I turn it on. I explain some more about the water. They ask me to turn it on and see what it does. I explain that I've always been taught that mixing water and electricity is not usually considered to be a good thing, so no - I won't be turning it on. A glimmer of understanding for a moment... and then they ask what happens if I turn it on. Repeat a few more times. Then they ask what happens... and interrupt themselves saying I can't turn it on because of the water. After 5 minutes of explaining I wasn't going to turn the sodding (or even sopping) thing on, they agreed to send someone out. The HR manager stuck her head round the door near the end of it, and suggested I ask the chap on the phone to come and turn it on...

And Ricky, just think of all the positive karma you're accruing. You'll probably come back in your next life as a Amazonian Indian and never have to see a computer your entire life. (This is not an Amazon or Kindle bash. ) Last edited by slayda; 02-12-2009 at 10:44 PM.
