Update ebook on Kindle while preserving reading position?

I read fanfic on my kindle using a very specific workflow:

1) Use the Fanficfare plugin to download the fic
2) Convert the EPUB to an AZW3
3) Send the AZW3 to the kindle.

However, if a fic updates, the only way to get the update on the kindle is to remove the document from the kindle and then add the updated one; this causes my position to be lost.

Is there any good way to replace the file on the Kindle but save my reading position?

Sorry, but no.

You can do so with a Kobo though.

If nothing else changes about the book, other than an edit. The ASIN stays and the book replaces. The reading location may get confused a bit if you edit changes the character count before.
I feel a total regenerate will not pass this requirement and it will be treated as NEW

I see; so when I re-convert the EPUB to AZW3 it's probably creating a new identifier, right? Is there any way to reuse the existing one?

Re-converting by itself is not doing that (I edit EPUB ->AZW3 any times). Something else is kicking up a fuss.

Just to clarify: The updated books appear as NEW, and at the start?

That's not completely right. I believe RDavidson is using FFF to download stories that have added chapters. In that case, the book will be rebuilt with an updated ToC. Resending the updated book to the device will not update the copy of the ToC in the database. The reading position will be OK and will be updated, but using the ToC and the navigation bar won't work properly.

Sorry, my mistake. Yes, if the ToC is changed because of more stories added, then the updated copy won't be correct on a Kobo. Looks like there may be no way replace books on a Reader that have added stories to them without the Reader calling it a new book.

That's correct. As davidfor said, it's probable that the EPUB is being completely rebuilt, so there's probably not a good way around this.

Thanks anyway.
