My Kindle stuck on the tree screen after updating to 5.8.9.2

Might this be a case of "wrong update software"? Are you sure you manually installed the version that was MEANT for your version of Voyage? You can break them by accidentally getting the wrong version (I just wait for an over-the-air download).

It is only the factory production line testing update packages used with the current jailbreak that are not model locked.

There is one way that the update process can fail and brick a Kindle that I know of (although not seen reported here in a long time).

It is a full image update, the package is checked, the current charge level of the battery is checked but due to space limitations, if something goes wrong along the way, the updater has no way to "back up" (no "un-do" feature in the updater).

So if the O.P. would hook up the serial port and we looked into the problem, I bet we would find the system is trying to run a mixture of firmware versions (the new one only partly installed).

And that can be fixed (from the serial port) -
Put it into the 'diags' system, put a known good copy of the KV, 5.8.9.2 update on the drive, then trigger the install.
('Main' will not re-install the current version (or older) but diags will.)

* Just like our update_*.bin packages here are model locked.
Same package type and same package updater (we use the system one Amazon provides for their own use).

An interesting O.T. chuckle -
Over the recent couple of years I have found references to Lab126 packages being built by our (NiLuJe's) Kindletool.
Must have been times when our packager was more "up to date" than the company's internal application.
(It is also very likely much faster than their's.)

Hmm.. Was this KV already jail-broken and RP and CRP installed? If so, I would think you could get into diags by restarting the KV while plugged into your computer. As knc1 noted above, you should be able to recover from this via diags.

Hey, it sounds great! Thank you knc1! But now my PC can't recognize this kindle, how can I put it into the 'diags' system?

My PC is running windows 10 64bit, I got the Serial Number of this KV and I have putty already.

No, it is in Amazon's original system, not jail broken. My PC can't recognize this kindle, how can I put it into diags please? My PC is running windows 10 64bit.

If your PC doesn't recognize the drive even for a moment while you reboot it.

And you didn't already have the rescue pack installed on jailbreak.

At this point the only options appear to be:

1: Take amazons offer, or call back and complain even more, trying to get a full replacements.

2: If you bought the kindle with a credit card, call your company and ask if they have an extended warranty program ( I know mine offer double warranty up to 2 years [ 6 months becomes 1 year, 1 year becomes 2 years and thats the max ] ), and see if you are in that timeframe.

3: Open the case of the kindle and perform electronic surgery.

3B Buying a new logic board here or on ebay etc.

Keeping in mind that it could have been just bad timing, and something else may have broken while you did the update.

The actual logic board replacement would be at 3:20, you wouldn't need the rest of the video.

Under that set of conditions, you don't.

You either return it (for a credit towards a new purchase) -
You can sell it as "needs repair or for parts only", for more than what Amazon offered for it -
You can open it up and install the serial port connection.

Note:
There was a recent thread/post(s) made here about using fastboot to recover from a similar situation (repair needed screen) -
but I don't think it will help for your situation.
Although of course you can look up those directions and try them, you can't make the current situation worse.

Although you must either leave it on a wall charger or open and remove the battery. Either one will help prevent it from self-destructing when the battery runs down.

Any luck getting it fixed yet? I did a manual update on my Voyage and it behaved properly... is there any chance power was interrupted or changed or something during the upgrade process? You mentioned doing a 40 second reset - is the kindle responding to holding the power button down at all? Are you still looking at the tree, or are you looking at a blank screen (powered all the way down)?

When you updated, did it ever show the "update successful" screen, then go into it's restart process - is that where it froze? One thought might be pulling power altogether - you can wait until the battery dies, or to be faster, pull the back cover, and unplug the battery for a few minutes, then plug it back in and see if it comes back.
