Air travel restrictions

If I were flying, I wouldn't have any problem with the feds scanning all of my electronic devices - a brand new flip-phone with pre-paid minutes, two Sansa Clip Zips loaded with music and audiobooks, and a Casio G-Shock watch.

At the Delta area of the Cincinnati airport, a sign warned passengers that beginning Saturday on flights returning to the U.S. any electronic devices other than a cellphone would have to be placed in checked baggage. The airline flies between Cincinnati and Paris.

A Delta spokesman said the sign was posted in error by an employee at the airport. Asked if Delta had anticipated that the in-cabin ban on larger electronics would go into effect this week, the spokesman declined to comment.

They're going to have trouble from international business people I bet. Many of them probably use laptops and won't want to let them out of their sight I wager.

There have already been bombs placed in checked in luggage. There has never been a liquid bomb. What ever happened to the rule that you had to turn on your electronic devices? If I didn't already have non-refundable tickets for a summer trip to Europe, I'd be looking at flying in to Canada, and changing planes there to get back in the US. Quite frankly, if any terrorists are really planning to blow up aircraft flying to the US, they'll just start somewhere other than where this restriction is enforced.

I don't really believe it, but some conspiracy theorists are already positing that the real reason for requiring electronics to be checked in is to allow national security agencies to surreptitiously copy the hard drives of people they're watching. And, if one's device goes missing, is it because it was stolen by a security agency or an airport worker?

Unlike, I suspect, the overwhelming majority of participants in this thread, I've been subject to these restrictions (has anyone else?), and I have to say that for me personally it was really no big deal. I read a book and watched the in-flight film. Not the end of the world to be parted from my Kindle for 6h.

Which screening process do you prefer - body scanners or physical pat-downs?

I don't mind going through a metal detector, but I very much object to body scanners and pat-downs. Since you don't have the option to select a metal detector over the other two types of screening, I refuse to fly.
