This video shows the regular Max connected to a Windows PC via USB and running app, which I already discussed in another thread. This solution is already possible and allows mirroring of PC display. The guy on video is talking about future concept (Onyx device connected to a PC via HDMI and working as a monitor). This solution would allow to reduce latency, to use Onyx device as extended monitor (not mirroring only). This device was not showed in the exhibition. It is still quite confidential and there are no pictures of it even by agents of Onyx. I want to be optimistic and hope those new devices could be available already in autumn of this year.

Thank you @Booxtor much appreciated.
Yes, it has to be as an extended display. That would add a lot of value to some old tablets I have. Use it as both an Android tablet or an extended secondary monitor. With that price and value would start to par up. Most welcome development. |

I received the Max Carta a few days ago. I wish to review:
-- the good: it is arguably the best money can currently buy; -- the bad: although it could theoretically be better; -- the best: and in time it will be improved. I had a problem with the screen impact: contrary to past products, I have a too clear perception of the individual pixels (hence, in font rendering, of jaggedness and of contrast distribution). The T68 and i86 screens have better effect. I am not sure if this is because of the lower density, or if it is because of a lack of a further layer (e.g. the capacitive screen) on top of the main EPD screen. I would have tried placing a matte film on top (which IS also in general a good idea) - but it is not clear how to do it, it is not standard practice if not on glass. On the other hand, the effect is not that patent if I keep the tablet at "desk" distance (30+ cm) instead of "hold" distance. I guess it is a healthy alarm reminding not to touch the screen with my nose. For the rest, it is quite something. You may miss the capacitive touch/multitouch, but it is nice to be able to use precision with the electromagnetic pen. The screen looks enormous, and that extra real estate does mean more productivity. Office automation work would be quite comfortable thanks to the screen, although responsiveness is still not that of past firmwares (the T68 was an almost desktop like experience). Oddly enough, typing (Bluetooth keyboard) in normal fields has lightning fast responsiveness, so there may be something related to the interaction of Kingsoft and the firmware. For PDF, I tested ezPDF Reader and I was very impressed - I posted a video demonstration in a relevant parallel thread. The battery seems amazing: I watched a 30 mins video today using a mere 10% of battery. I thought the EPD screen would drain it - instead OLED based devices seem to consume much more (I also believe that the processors drained as much as the screen: this A2 is an engineering masterpiece). I noticed a couple of minor oddities here and there in the firmware behaviour, but nothing crippling, just strange events (from time to time the cursor jumps to the bottom of the page in Kingsoft Office and makes a minimal selection?!?) It was a very pleasing, productive afternoon. |

Having been surprised by the low power consumption experienced yesterday, as I just watched a video I took some stats:
a 50 mins video seemed to consume, of battery around: -- 2.8% screen (A2 mode) -- 2.8% VLC (the player) -- 5% Android OS (the decoder?) -- 0.8% the idle state -- traces of other in a total rough 12%. Of screen, 2.8% (120ish mAh): try that with an OLED or IPS display! This screen looks pearlish, it is greener than the fields around you |

Where did you see that it's android 6? Not trying to be a smartass, I also suspect that it might be the Max Monitor that a leaflet was leaked for a few weeks ago. I think that leaflet also started android 6, so I'd be glad to see that confirmed, I just couldn't figure out from the video that it definitely is marshmallow (although given the available information and the changed UI that seems to be most likely).

The writing experience itself is good, though you have to adjust to the new medium. After a while of using the e-reader to take notes, you will notice having difficulties readjusting to paper writing. But the readjustment is quick. I still prefer hand writing. Unfortunately this is a dying art. |

About that Image from Sony DPT, those guys are perfectionists. There is in the menu no option for turning the page horizontally and splitting it in two. Also creating tables is tricky. You can make squares and writing inside them, but you can only make a table by uniting squares. Nothing like in Excel or Word Office. Booxtor and the Onyx team should think about introduction such options in their Notes app.

I'm currently struggling between waiting for Max2 or just buy a Max Carta now. I actually don't care much for finger touch, in fact I'm worried about how well their palm rejection would be. But considering the firmware upgrade, might be worth the wait, depend on how long I have to wait and how much it costs though. |

The only note writing demonstration I've seen is the one where they switch between tabs of PDFs (one is the document, the other a blank note page).
Can you hold the device horizontally and and view two pages at the same time (like an actual opened book)? Cause then you should be technically able to just have the document on the left and insert a blank PDF as the right hand page and take notes like that? Just a thought. |
