The hours are calculated in the same way as before. So, it should be the total amount of time spent reading using that device.
How stupid is that? Now I don't know how many books I've read in a certain time span and how long it took me to do so, but I know how many read books I have on my device and for how many hours I've used said device?

If the device had a certain life span measured in hours I could see sense in counting the number of hours read in total, but still the book count wouldn't make sense.

And if I know how many read books are on the device, I can only use this number to calculate how much memory space is wasted.

But none of this is giving me any useful information at all.

And with the KA1 this non-useful information is skewed too. The first bunch of books and/or hours read weren't properly logged because the software was buggy. Remember, it used to show 5 books read for ages.

I don't know what they are smoking at Kobo to come up with such things but they should seriously consider packing some with their devices to make their nonsense and the gazillion of buggy updates bearable.

But thank you, David, for letting me know.

The problem with that statement is that people said exactly the same thing with the other way of counting finished book. They looked in the library, counted the finished books and it didn't agree with the stats and they questioned it.

I like how Kobo counting finished books now, because when I set books as finished with Kobo Utilities, it will show the finished books on the reading stats.

Huh? Sorry, but I don't understand what you are saying. Does this mean I can get the "old" stats back, when I use Kobo Utilities to do it for me?

David, if I roll back to an older firmware version, can I do it without a hard reset, by just putting the firmware in like with an update? And would it restore my old stats? And if it wouldn't is there anyway to manually put them into a counter so it would count on from the numbers I put there?

In the old method of counting finished books only the books you finished reading on the device set as finished in the reading stats.

See here what I mean about reading stats.

Yes, you can set books as read, unread and finished with Kobo Utilities, my advise is to set all the books on your device as unread and then to set the books you want as finished.

No. There is no way to fiddle with the database to get the old version of the stats back. The two methods count different things.

It depends on how far back you want to go. The fewer the versions, the safer it is. Going back to 3.19.x probably won't work. Going back to the last version where the stats worked, might, but I don't remember which that was. There is a problem doing this in that Kobo changed how some of the data related to the stats is stored. I think that was when the stats stopped working. Because of this, going back with a current database probably won't work. I'd expect it to show zeros, random numbers or force a setup.

If you want to do this, I would suggest taking a full copy of everything on the user partition of the device first. If it all goes wrong, you can restore this after a factory reset and try again.

No, that's not the same thing. The pre-4.4 firmware counted rows for the "Book finished" event in the Event table. These rows were not removed if you removed a book. The 4.4 firmware counts the number of books that have the status "Finished". If you remove a book, this number drops. This calculation is used for both the count of finished books, and the percent finished.

As I said earlier, the calculation has changed a couple of times. And at some point the percent finished was from the book status (4.4 method) and the books finished from the event (pre-4.3 method).

Thank you!

I guess I'll just read on with it like it is, stopp fiddling around with any updates and wait for some other company to come up with an 8inch reader. I loved my original Aura so much but all the hassle with the KA1 somehow put me off Kobos even though I do love the big screen.

For me, I think the "new" way of counting finished books is better.

From a home screen stand point, I am happy that Kobo took some of the comments that people made on their support website into account when tweaking the design.

Another change I haven't seen mentioned...

They fixed the really irritating frontlight behaviour! (See here for the way it used to act).

It now works in a much more sensible way. Using the edge-swipe gesture, you can only set the light between 1%-100%. This is sensible, as it stops you accidentally killing the backlight in the dark. It also allows you to easily set the backlight to the minimum value.

To turn it off, you can use the popup brightness menu - this now lets you set it to 0% instantly, without the weird delay which used to exist.

Most people didn't seem to care about this too much, but I found the old behaviour extremely irritating. I'm very pleased with how it works now.

I like it, too. Now, if they would just let me edge-swipe on the right to change font size...

I agree. The previous method stats was fun and nice to have. Now to the serious business of reading.
