Have you read (or searched for or counted) the number of times people have posted: "My jailbreak stopped working" or "KUAL stopped working" or "KUAL will only give me an error message"? Know what the problem is? They changed the registration state and our application keys got wiped. Depending on the device/firmware, that requires the re-installation of the MKK package or of the "HotFix" package, whichever is the appropriate one. So skip all of that grief for yourself, set the registration state to the way you want it. Then you will not need to go down that: "It suddenly broke ..." path. Hi knc1,
I have the same question like Radeon89. I am considering to buy a new kindle oasis. As far as you 've mentioned, firstly we need to register our kindle; then do the jailbreak afterwards.; and wish that Amazon would not update to the newest firmware version during that time. Thanks. Just how fast is your WiFi connection? Can it transfer a 100+Mbyte update file faster than you can push the "register" button followed by the "airplane mode" button? (Updates are not sent by 3G (except for the very old 3G only devices) ) |

If you want to be sure to register it and not to update it, it could be an idea to saturate the bandwidth of the connection i.e. downloading some files while registering the kindle. However, if we talk about gigabit connections it might be difficult to saturate the bandwidth, and in this case the alternative is to stay far as much as possible from the WiFi source in different terms at the margin of the WiFi area.

A very intersting question now comes to my mind:
The standard procedure of jailbreaking is: 1) Register your Kindle to make sure you get all menu options. 2) Do a factory reset. (And keep in mind that this must NEVER EVER be done again!!) 3) Install the initial factory test firmware. 4) ... all the other steps for jailbreaking ... Does the procedure in 2) not change the registration state then? ![]() BTW: I never plan to do a rsgistration with Amazon. Is is as well as the "factory reset" a definitive no-no for me. I intent to use the Kindle as an offline ebook reader only; I even don't have an Amazon account to register with. All my documents are from other sources and without any DRM. So there also will never be a change in the "registration state". And this could also explain why I don't have any problems with the "document style" launching method of KUAL and CoolReader and KindCalc (the *.azw2 files in the /documents folder) even with 8th generation Kindles running fw 5.8.7.0.1 ... None of the add-ins here depend on the state of the registration.
Only on the Mobileread developer keys. The next step, #3, installs a firmware build that does not care about the registration state. At least that part of it we use for the rest of the steps. But step #3 requires access to UYK menu option (while running a fairly recent, consumer build of the firmware). Some device/firmware combinations do not allow access to UYK unless the device is registered. Which is why I wrote: Quote:

For avoidance of doubt, if in the menu I see the UYK option (even if greyed out), I can skip the Kindle registration and go straight to the next step of jailbreak guide. Is that correct? Many thanks again for your support. |

That is the only thing that counts, it is there when you need it. If it is not there when you need it, change the registration state, and then start over. = = = = = What is it with this reluctance to register the Device? Is there really this many people who are trying to jailbreak blacklisted devices? If the intent is to JB the device in order to try defeating the blacklisting - You can give that idea up right now, unless you have access to Amazon's blacklist database, nothing you can change on the device itself will change its blacklist status. There really isn't any way you can use anything on this site to re-sell stolen Kindles successfully. It isn't us, the Kindle system is designed to prevent such activity. = = = = = = I really, really think you should not be trying to modify your Kindle. Leave it alone, and we will all be much better off. Last edited by knc1; 05-06-2017 at 05:47 PM. |

Phew, what you're talking about now?!? Blacklisted, whitelisted? Okay, a short Google research showed up a world completely new to me. But it reminded me to really having read some time ago, that Amazon supplies Kindle devices bought there "pre-registered" to the respective account.
As I've written already somewhere in this thread, here in Germany many, many, many Kindles are sold in non-Amazon shops ("normal" electronic marts, next to Kobo and Tolino ebook readers, and regularily located not far away from Android tablets in those shops ![]() ![]() ![]() |

If you don't know what "Blacklisted" means, then you have nothing to be concerned about. And as you seem to keep forgetting to mention, the firmware builds distributed with Kindles in Germany are not the "generic" firmware builds. So you really can't generalize from what you see on your own device. |

Mine is just curiosity, the device is obviously not stolen and comes directly from a reputable shop. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us and for the time dedicated to reply to our questions. |

![]() Kindle firmwares in Germany are exactly the same, downloaded from exactly the same servers. i.e. look at the official (german) firmware download page for voyage: https://www.amazon.de/gp/help/custom...deId=201630670 download URL there is https://s3.amazonaws.com/firmwaredownloads/update_$foobar.bin I also checked with wireshark and I'm using a firewall to block these specific paths (not blocking whole amazon universe) for months, successfully. So, this is wrong information. Firmware is not specially modified in Germany. To make an educated guess: I think people are doing things wrong, not RTFM, have no idea what they are doing actually, and end up trying to explain weird behavior through wack theories. My Kindle was on 5.8.7.0.1 (bought in April '17, Germany) and I successfully JB - I mentioned earlier in this thread - and I'm now on 5.8.9 and never got a single problem, neither with KUAL or anything else, using it everyday. |

It is included in the posts here, where the Germany firmware build was approximately 30Mbyte (IIRC) larger than the USA build. And the device we where working on at the time did not work as expected until (the user) installed the German build. There have been several firmware builds released since then. IIRC, that was before Amazon changed the download URL structure. You can spot at where in the release series they re-organized the download servers, just highlight the links listed in step #7 with a browser that will display the target URL (Firefox does). Amazon does not provide any assurance that they will not change something that has 'always been that way' at any time, without notice. But you can read in the directions that nothing was added about regional variations. It just seemed to me not something that could be depended upon in firmware that was otherwise install time localized. Edit: Well my memory was wrong, I did add a comment on regional variations. But I have just edited it to include (hopefully) a better description of what has been reported. Ref: Step #7, second bullet. - - - - The other thing subject to recent discussion - the subject of registration . . . . That was added as a result of my own experience, confirmed by others, that you can not reach UYK menu until the device is registered. But that was only on one device/firmware combination (both mine and the people confirming), so it remains a recommendation not a requirement. - - - - I realize that it is probably hard to imagine that a post as long as the first one in this thread has been minimized. But I can assure you it has been, only the show-stopper exceptions to the general rule(s) has been included. Last edited by knc1; 05-07-2017 at 10:21 AM. |

Hello Everyone,
I just received my first kindle (KOA) ! I want to upload my Calibre collections and I understand that I need to jailbreak my kindle to do that. When I received my kindle, the firmware version was 5.8.9. By reading previous posts on this thread, I gathered that : 1) there are currently no jailbreak for 5.8.9 2) there is no way to downgrade my firmware to an older version in order to use this jailbreak (?) 3) so basically, there is no way to jailbreak my device as of now and ultimately no way to transfer my Calibre collections to my Kindle. Can someone confirm these information ? Thanks ! |
