i filled my original Kobo Aura 6 " internal memory up first leaving about 150mb and then i started using the external SD card slot, it's nice to have the option to use both.

i could have left the internal storage almost empty and just used the external SD card slot for all my books if i wanted to, that's why i think it's an extremely useful feature to have.

I think the original H2O is still better for my purposes, I don't care about waterproofing and I'd rather have a micro-SD slot. If it had 16GB onboard storage then I wouldn't worry about it, but with 8GB I would probably run ot of space within the lifetime of the device.

it's obviously a cost cutting decision by Kobo one which as you can tell leaves rather a bitter taste in my mouth and always will.

I suspect it has a lot more to do with the new form of water proofing than with cost cutting.

Yes. A lot of people didn't care for the plug, also; you can't please everyone.

Cost-cutting is an unnecessarily disparaging term, IMO. It conjures up images of greedy capitalists rubbing their hands together in glee, as they put one more thing over on the consumer. The reality is more along the lines of given the maximum price that can be charged for a device, how to keep production costs in line to make it viable. Amazon supposedly sells devices at cost and they set the prices. Kobo doesn't have a lot of wiggle room.

i agree with GeoffR comment i have no interest in a waterproof e-reader as far i'm concerned the external micro SD card slot is a very important feature and not worth sacrificing for water proofing imho.

your theory i'm afraid doesn't explain why the external micro SD card slot isn't on the Aura Edition 2, because as i'm sure you know that isn't waterproof, my cost cutting theory does however explain it's absence.

also the Glo HD didn't have the external micro SD card slot and that wasn't waterproof either, so imho the only conclusion i can take from this is it's a cost cutting decision by Kobo.

Sadly, I have to keep my cook book collection off the KA1 for that reason. With an average size around 200MB (those images suck storage like I got it for free), just not enough space on the internal storage. My H2O is now relegated to the hazardous environment that is my kitchen.

Basically, all my sideloaded books were on the external card. Factory reset? Pull the external card and plug it back in afterwards. My KA1 does not quite have enough internal storage for my entire collection but I figure I would have 28 months worth of reading if I left ~200MB free. Leaving off my cookbook collection leaves me with 2.4GB free though that took a bit of work in Calibre to separate my library into 3 segments (my books, my wife's books and cook books).

i'd like a external micro SD card slot regardless of what size the internal card is, it would be nice to have both, you know like we did in the (good old days) imho.

I just got my 1st edition H2O, and Calibre doesn't see the SD card. The device sees it, so I know it works.

That said, the screen!!!! It is so much nicer, the text so much sharper, than my Aura HD. About the same as my Glo HD. The light has a yellower tone than the others. Possibly better than my Voyage!

Or they simply want to have a more standard feature set across the board with certain "upgrades" as you step up the ladder. I mean how much of a per unit saving would we be talking by leaving the slot off? (although I suppose given the number of times folks have problems with their device seeing their card it probably saves some support costs I guess)

I would have gotten the new H2O, but for the possibility that I would be stuck with that dreadful new home screen.

what will you buy when the original H2O goes the same way as the Glo HD? which it will do relatively quickly once the H2O Edition 2 is released.
