Wow. I totally don't get the analogy.
Ever try to dry your hair with a moped? Sounds dangerous and ill-advised.
It would be a foolish and short-lived company who gave people mopeds when they really wanted hair dryers.
You want to pull the motor out of your hair dryer and hook it to your bike? Go ahead, but you have no cause to complain that the company didn't make it easy to use it in a way it's not intended, and instead chose to make it a safer, more reliable hair dryer.

Oh wait...were you trying to argue on my side? Good job.

Whereas it would be a highly successful company that downgrades mopeds and sells them as hair-driers. E-readers are nice little low-powered computers. You can do a lot more on them than read books. But you'd know that It's a shame so much Kindle community development will be rendered obsolete in the future Thanks Amazon.

Are you saying that's what Amazon is doing, or what Amazon SHOULD do? You're message is very unclear. If it's the latter, I eagerly await you to start your own company and make it so much more successful than Jeff's. You go show them why they're wrong.

Lol. Where did I say they were wrong?

Edit: Oh, you edited your post after I replied. For clarity, possibly.

Yes, I honestly couldn't tell for sure what you were trying to say.
I agree with you, but maybe "Mopeds as Bicycles" might be a little closer and clearer than "Mopeds as Hair dryers" which is still bouncing around my head like Zen koan.

I don't know, in 1983 I found that a Harley Davidson made an excellent hair dryer.

To borrow from Ben Franklin in "1776", Calling a moped a Harley is like calling an ox a bull.

Well I meant an actual Harley. Mom's boyfriend would give me a ride on his Harley when I had wet hair. Unfortunately for him, I actually made the comment about him being an excellent blow dryer to his friends.
I think he just liked showing off his new daughter.
Him and mom did get married later.

I believe the statement was made regarding eBook Readers. I am not sure it applies to tablets which are a different purpose and doesnot need to be used as an eBook reader at all. However their tablets are very competitive.

Jeff Bezos statement? The one HarryT linked to? The article focuses on the Paperwhite release in the UK, but the video clearly (to me) shows him talking about both Fire HD and Kindles, and him saying, paraphrasing, "Amazon hardware is sold at cost".

As someone who owns a 6.8" e-ink device with Android on it, I have to disagree. Using it for ANYTHING other than reading a book is painful, and I would never classify it as a "pretty powerful little device".

I will read on a tablet, but it's an Acer android, not a Fire. I wouldn't touch Amazon's offerings with a 10 foot pole. I don't care for proprietary anything right now.

I also have an android ereader. I think it's great since it DOESN'T HAVE GOOGLE anything and I didn't have to root it.

Every Android device contains proprietary software. Although the operating system core is open source, things like drivers, reading apps, etc, most assuredly are not. That's just the same as Amazon eInk devices, where the core Linux o/s is open source, but the things that sit on top of it are not. Android devices are no less proprietary than Amazon ones.

If you want totally free and open source you will have to great your own. And that is for a fact.

Wow, this thread got way more replies than I was expecting. I wasn't trying to start any arguments. I totally get that I was naive in purchasing the Kindle. I just assumed that since it was the most well-known eReader and was made by Amazon (who are in my experience pretty great in most respects), that it would be a really sick eReader. Kind of like when I bought my iPad, I just assumed that it would be sick, because it's an iPad... and that worked out very well for me. Also, it's not like you can really test out the Kindle's OS in advance. There's nowhere I can test eReaders in-store where I live. But I just assumed that "organising my books" was going to be something really straightforward. And yeah, I assumed that there would be no ads on my device, why would there be ads on my device? I've never had ads on any device I've ever bought, ever, so the thought never even crossed my mind to look it up, and the blurb on the website I bought it from never mentioned ads.

Anyway, I ordered a Kobo Aura ONE now, which is kind of bigger than I would have preferred, but the other features seem to make it worthwhile. I did read the comments saying that Kobos might have ads soon. If it works well for me as an eReader then I probably won't mind too much. I'll never buy anything from an ad tho, so it's a wasted effort on me. I don't really mind either if I can't jailbreak the Kobo easily or not, IF it has the features I want out of the box. And it seems like it does. Thanks for all the advice and feedback
