FREE/BARGAIN — Audiobooks

Do I need to use the Overdrive app to get the full audiobook from the downloaded .odm stub? I'd rather not install it if not necessary.

I believe you do need to use the Overdrive app. It's painless (IMHO). It then leaves perfectly useful .mp3 files in your documents directory (at least, by default). I copy them to where ever I really want to use them. Even to the extent of burning CDs for car use.

I've used Overdrive, for quite a while, without any problems.

I'm sure that someone will correct me if I'm wrong here. But, if you ever want to check out an audiobook from a public library, you will almost certainly need to have Overdrive installed. There are some other audiobook companies that public libraries have subscriptions with to supply the audiobooks that they then turn around and loan to library patrons--e.g., OneClick--but the big kahuna out there appears to be Overdrive.

I don't know if you read many books, but the same thing as the above about Overdrive is true with borrowing ebooks. And, so, you will have to install Overdrive's software. Overdrive seems to be the big kahuna for ebooks, too.

I don't use Overdrive software for downloading ebooks to my computer. Just ADE. But I think you *do* have to if you're using a tablet/phone.

I know that something in the instructions by the library, or maybe somewhere else, told me that I had to install it. Maybe they were wrong. I went through several computers since I first started borrowing ebooks and audiobooks from libraries, but I suppose that I just installed OverDrive as a matter of course, when setting up the computers, and didn't think about it. Maybe if I hadn't installed OverDrive, I would have had to install ADE?

Anyway everything works. And there's a saying here in the Deep South, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" (the rest of it goes, "if it is broke, fix it. If you can't fix it, paint it.")

I think that I have scooped the tube guy now, but I have been wrong before, mainly when he has hidden links under other links, etc. on the O.P., and it makes it hard to find the hidden links.

I made no secret of the fact that I was not impressed with christianaudio's selection of $4.99 audiobooks as part of a sale that they announced at the beginning of the month.

Well, I am much, much more impressed with the selection of $4.99 audiobooks that are a part of a different sale by audiobooks.com that just started. And the selection is larger--much larger--than the initial one--71 audiobooks, if I counted correctly!

Note: This sale does not continue through the end of the month, but ends May 19.

Thank you for the help - my libraries do use Overdrive but ebook downloads go directly from Amazon to my Kindle. Maybe the app is needed for epubs if no Kindle version is available? I'm not much into audiobooks yet but have started collecting some of the Amazon freebies for future use...
