Of course you don't have a /mrpackages, you erased everything that did not come from the factory.

For one example, scroll up to post #1312 above.

Ask yourself, what things do I need -
You need KUAL, that is an un-archive and move the -2.0- document version to /documents (it is a document).

You need MrPI, that is an archive the entire contents to the top level of visible USB storage.
Be certain your un-archive tool is set to create the directory structure that is in the archive.
After you do that, you will have a /mrpackages directory.

Now you have MrPI to install things with and KUAL to run MrPI.
Next thing to do is install the 'hotfix' package with MrPI.

If you can't run MrPI from KUAL (because KUAL will not run) -
post back here with a description of what did happen.
Perhaps I can figure out how to proceed if KUAL refuses to run MrPI.

There has been a report that the booklet version of KUAL does not run properly on 5.8.9
Here we will find out if the document version of KUAL will run properly on 5.8.9

To answer your last question first: With the KT3 of my friend both the document (KUAL.azw2) and booklet version (KUAL.kual file) work under 5.8.9. But the other 8th generation's Kindles may vary (like your mileage ...).

@Valladao: Well, looks like you still have the "very first step jb key" which you installed under the initial fw via the ;installHtml command. But unfortunately, the "hotfix" seems to be gone. This hotfix transfers the whole bunch of developer keys into the system partition. That is the prerequisite for any other apps/hacks to run - except KUAL, and of course the hotfix, themselves.

Have you tried to reinstall the hotfix via the "Update Your Kindle" menu? This should bring the bundle of keys back to your device. And all the other apps/hacks you use will no longer fail due to "missing permissions" (i.e. their respective key isn't on the device yet - just that one used for the hotfix and KUAL is).

IIRC, it is all one big thread -
Start at the most recent end and scroll up - there are at least two file formats, you want the most recent one described.

(Of course, 5.8.9 might have changed the format of that file, but we don't know until someone tries. )
I wished to write this earlier but I didn't have the time. So here it is:

Somehow, to my surprise, I actually managed to do that process. I now have all the device options unblocked again, which means the "recent format" of the file still works for 5.8.9. Unfortunately my happiness didn't last long because it's still not possible for me to use those KUAL functions and KOReader.

Two things I noticed:
1) When I said earlier that I was able to install the hotfix, I was wrong. What actually happened was the "destroying the package" message when I used mrpi, but I didn't notice and thought it had worked.

2) Apparently my device has some kind of kernel or iptables related problem. I noticed this first when following Panopticon's guide, in the step you're supposed to add some iptables rules. This is the exact message returned:

"FATAL: Module ip_tables not found.
iptables v1.4.15: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded."

Later I noticed the same message in a KUAL log (which I can send you if you want).

If you want me to test anything else just say, knc1. I'll keep following the thread and stubbornly trying to get stuff to work.

@Antinoos: I didn't think of that before, but I tried now and it doesn't work. As soon as I unplug the USB cable I receive the Amazon error message and the file is deleted.

Please provide a link to: "Panopticon's guide" whatever that is.

The message is probably correct, Amazon probably does not ship the filter module.
Just what are you trying to accomplish?
I can't think of any reason to add the filter table(s) to the existing firewall.

How are you executing those command line commands?
(the ones for inserting firewall rules)

Whatever it is, we might be able to use it to get the 'hotfix' (which includes the keys missing from running KUAL) package contents installed.

My mind only works in the morning, say 14 hours from now.

This is Panopticon's guide: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=193260

About the reason for adding filter tables, there's absolutely none. You have to understand I have no idea of what I'm doing, I'm simply following directions (or trying to).

I'm using PuTTY, with SSH and root. I followed these instructions: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kin...USB_Networking

[Edit] Let me be more specific about what I done using PuTTY:

Once in the terminal as root I first created the reginfo file using vi (same command in the wiki link above), but using the new format for the file instead. Then saved and used the 3 lines Panopticon's said that "prevents Kindle from deleting the file". Then he says to exit, check if the process worked (which it did) and then log in again. So now would be the iptables part, and I once more executed the lines he wrote in his guide (like this "iptables -I OUTPUT -m iprange --dst-range 23.0.0.0-23.15.255.255 -j DROP"). Any of those return the error message I said. Then I exited.

So you have ssh access to the device.

That makes it rather simple, open the 'hotfix' package and run its install script from the Kindle's command line.
It probably would not hurt to read the script before running it.

(No exact directions, since I haven't looked inside of the 'hotfix' package in ages.)

Report back if you do not manage to do it.
I will see if I can figure it out for you.

Once KUAL is running again, then install the BBB (Block Big Brother) firewall extension.
That will give you menu control over blocking contact with Amazon's servers.
That is: It takes care of the firewall rules with menu buttons.

Note:
It may be missing a server address or two - I can't recall when I last checked if it was still complete.
Not a big deal, since with BBB the firewall rules used exist in visible USB storage where you can easily add rules to block additional IP ranges.

Sure thing then, if I don't discover how to do it I'll tell you.

And thanks for the tip about BBB, but I won't actually use WiFi (all I want is KOReader ).

[Edit] knc1, I placed the hotfix .bin file inside a folder in the root directory. Then, through SSH, I used cd to get to that folder (cd /mnt/us/folder) and tried to execute the file with ./hotfix.bin (also tried chmod +x hotfix.bin before executing), it gives me the following message: line 1: syntax error: unexpected ")"

Is it something along these lines or am I WAY off here?

[Edit 2] It's working!!! YES, YES, YES, I can finally sleep now!

I found NiLuJe's KindleTool: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=187880
And used it to create a tar.gz file of the hotfix. Then I used the commands I mentioned above and installed the 2 .sh files. Rebooted the device and installed KUAL (also using SSH and .sh files. I don't know if it was needed, but I did it this way). And now KOReader opens again!

Thanks a lot for all the help and developing, knc1! Tomorrow I can give you more info if you want (now I really have to sleep)

It was really meant as just a tip for a very last try... I already supposed that it won't work, because the Hotfix.bin installation procedure is intended for use with the factory build only. And fw >5.8.8 blocks even more binary updates/downgrades.

What yo did for your final success is exactly what my tip was about: Try to reapply the hotfix. Congratulations that it finally worked for you. An additional tip: Avoid all and any further firmware upgrades. And leave the device in airplane mode (as you've already promised to do...).

Thanks for taking the effort yourself.

Yours is the second device with "recovered functionality" after performing a "Reset" while running newer than 5.8.7 firmware.
Second device and second model.

On the other one, that person had "Rescue Pack" and its optional add-on "Coward's Rescue Pack" installed at the time.
(RP installs ssh into the other OS, the diags os - which very rarely is touched by an Amazon update.)

There was some discussion about if I should add a recommendation to the JB about installing RP (and optionally, CRP).
But I wanted (and still want) some more rescue stories before I know how to write it up.

Actually, when I saw that I was going to install files using SSH I felt it might be dangerous because I could do something wrong, so I did install RP and CRP with mrpi before that.
The installation of RP went nicely until the end, when it mentioned something like a "fail 1" or "error 1", can't remember correctly. Still, I installed CRP after and there was no error for this package.

@Antinoos: You bet, no upgrades for me. Everything is running smoothly now, I certainly don't want to break any of that.

Since Amazon "Disabled" your Kindle in their database, I would not expect their system to be sending out any OTA update for it.

But you do have to be careful about allowing it to connect with Amazon, the system will toss out that fake registration file on any excuse.
(Which only means you'll have to type it back in again.)

Blocking the Amazon network is what the BBB add-in (and those iptables instructions) all about. With those installed and active, you can use Wifi.

Oh, I understand that, there's no chance of a OTA for me. Still, if I'm not mistaken I could download their upgrade bin from the site (when they release a 5.8.10 for example) and install that. What I was saying is that I don't want to because everything is great right now.

If I end up feeling the need to use WiFi I'll check BBB, but I doubt it since I never used Wikipedia lookup or their browser in the first place.

Hi Valladao,

I don't know your situation. But I am using a Kindle Voyage (bought in 2015). I hadn't known any jailbreak stuffs till couple months ago. I firstly downgraded my kindle to 5.6.0 (from somewhere 5.7.X, 3 months ago). The only reason that I wanted to downgrade is to be able to use the command: ~ds, in order to keep my screen not shutting down automatically. I just started jailbreaking it 2 weeks ago. Everything was totally good. I could use Koreader. However I upgraded my firmware to the newest 5.8.9 two days ago (because I didn't read and acknowledge any warning in this forum). After that, KUAL and Koreader still work. However, there is some inconvenience, files cannot be opened by Koreader on default. I have to firstly open Kual, then open Koreader, then open files I want. Other than that, of couse, I cannot downgrade my firmware anymore. The most important thing that I need now is to keep my screen not shutting down after 10 minutes (because I am reading lots of academic documents, which I not only need to read but also require time to think of). This vital thing disapears now on 5.8.9 (~ds not working). There is some interesting thing, which I have noticed, that is, if I deregister my kindle now (sign out my Amazon account on my kindle) then I will receive a message from Amazon saying that I am not an unauthorized developer, and then, simultaneously, I also cannot proceed Kual (thus Koreader) anymore. However, if I reset (i.e. restart, do not mean reset to the factory) my Kindle, then Kual and Koreader work again.////////////Can anybody know any method to keep my kindle awake even if I don't touch the screen for more than 10 minutes? Thanks.
