You may be referring to the Android Kindle app. Yes, on my Nexus 7 it is like that, which is distasteful on the rare occasion that I open it.

However on my Kindle Voyage, you can select whether you want to see that type of thing on your home screen, or not. (Also I did pay to remove ads from my Voyage).

Good to know. Someone had said in one of the threads about the new Kobo home screen that this was no longer the case.

It does seem like it uses your Overdrive borrowed books to fill the recommended books if you haven't purchased any on that account I imagine it'd suggest top sellers if no data was available ti Kobo.

As far as I know Amazon and Barnes and Noble have similar suggestions on their devices. These aren't like the ads you pay to remove from Kindle

Doing a quick search in the Kindle forum, recommendations can be disabled. Can Kobo recommendations be disabled?

i dont have the new screen yet. saying that i have found many books, netflix shows etc by recommendations based on my history so if kobo can get it right and actually recommend books i would like i dont see a problem with it.
i will buy the new h2o when it comes out in the uk as i am still using the original aura and find the aura one to big.

I'm happily running my Aura One on firmware version 4.28432 (patched) and haven't seen any reason to upgrade. If Kobo forces the new homescreen in the next version of the firmware, that pretty much guarantees that I won't be upgrading the firmware again.

Now back on topic--I'm perfectly happy with my Aura One, but if I didn't have that I think the new features and additional on-board memory would be enough to tempt me to upgrade from my aging Aura HD. I don't mind not having a micro sd slot, as I've never used external memory--even with my early Sony 505 that only had 256mb of on board memory.

For the one that the public has no, but apparently there have been changes to it that we'll see in 4.4xx I don't know the extent of those changes. However Kobo sent out a survey about the new home screen to those who got it, and judging from the reception here I have to imagine Kobo got an earful about at least being able to disable or hide panels. I know I gave very specific feedback about that particular issue even though I hardly look at the new screen.

Could be--but I only read kePubs on my device--have Calibre convert ePubs with the extended driver on the fly. I don't notice any slowness/lagging with the kePubs, and since I only read fiction on my reader I don't have the problems others have mentioned regarding highlighting, etc.

I don't connect my device to wifi at all, not for the kobo store and not for overdrive. Even if it's less than a quarter of the screen, it's a waste of space if you don't use the function that will fill it.

What I can't find anywhere: does it have a flush screen or not?

My H2O battery is starting to run down a little faster, and I'm keen on the comfortlight, so this would be a no-brainer upgrade for me in the second half of this year (it comes here mid-year). If I could get the old home screen. I'll be watching threads with interest when it launches...

I don't care very strongly about whether there are recs or not, so long as they are dismissable or take up minimal space. However, I make extensive use of the homescreen customisation, especially the ability to anchor certain collections to it for one-touch access.

The new menu design also lets you skip the home screen entirely
