The more academic, cerebral, and perhaps even just plain odd people among us, may be interested in knowing that Manchester University Press is having a real huge sale.

How huge? 80% off. That's not "up to" 80% off, that 80% off everything in the sale. They don't say how many books are in the sale, but in browsing the sale, the books seem to go on and on and on.

It covers a range of subjects, and thankfully you can filter by subject.

Everything is priced in pounds. I'm assuming that MUP will accept orders from other countries, including the U.S., and convert the currency (for perhaps a small fee), but I don't know that. This is a GBTI for me (although in this case it will be of little consequence to anyone else if I don't get back to it).

If you are in a country other than the U.K., and order successfully, would you please do the King's subjects in the rest of the world, and others in the world know about your success? Likewise, if your order is unsuccessful, would you let know that, too? Please?

If not, there are hackers . . . er . . . computer tinkerers who know how to move their computer to Taiwan or Canada or India or wherever, within a few minutes, without ever leaving their house or place of business. I can't tell you how to do it, because I don't know, and I wouldn't share the information even if I did know (unless the company didn't care). But others have shared, and can share, that information on this and other forums.

I didn't dig too far, but it appears that only the paper versions of the books are in the sale, as I haven't come across any with ebook versions that were also discounted.

The Philosophy Book (Big Ideas Simply Explained). Only 99 cents right now (I paid $1.99 a while back ).

I have trouble understanding philosophy. I need all the help that I can get (I think that I halfway have figured out Plato's imagery of the Cave and the shadows thingie, though). I think that the 352 pages of this tome will help a lot, but I haven't had a chance to open my copy--it's a GBTI. This book seems to be a good one--Some ratings: 4.5 (200) at Amazon; 4.16 (1,737).

Very similar to the two above (subject matter not applying). Dittos on the 99 cent price. Ratings very similar. It's even got 352 pages, just like the previous two. However, I didn't buy this one in the past, so I didn't lose a dollar on this one.

I started a rant against MUP before I saw your post. I actually had just about finished it. Then, I lost track of it, and can't find it now. And I can't stand to re-do something that I've already done.

I think that we both have come to the correct conclusions.

I will repeat this, that I had brought up in the post that disappeared into cyberspace, however. MUP has 9 books that they call Open Access. "Oh, wonderful, you may be thinking, 9 free books." No, they're not free at all. One that I spot-checked was £15 + VAT!

MUP you are now officially on my meanie list.

Look at the site more carefully. The cost is for either the paper book or the commercial ebook. Each of the Open Access books has a link below it saying "Click here to go to the OA version" which takes you to a page where you can download the book for free (as a DRM-free PDF).

I never saw that link and I realize now that it's because only a few are currently available. The rest of the OA books are in production. That's one of the dangers of spot-checking (I might have pointed out, that I had spot-checked, in the post that disappeared; I don't see it in my previous posted messages about the sale, etc.). But what's a person to do?

As it turns out, the one OA book that I was interested in is not free.

I hope that the day comes when an OA item is universally, by definition, free. There are still some, like MUP, apparently, which use that term in a broader sense. In fact, I don't see any difference to the customer in an OA and non-OA book at the MUP website. There almost certainly are differences in how publication is funded and things like that. There is probably something on this MUP webpage which will clue people in to what the differences are, in their way of thinking. I lack the interest in reading any of it.

So, I think that the upshot is, practically speaking, that there are 9 books at MUP that are currently designated as "Open Access." At least one of those, and possibly others, are free. If you are interested in seeing if an item among those OA items is free, check the book's webpage.

Sure. The page I searched for was "open access" ==> https://www.oapen.org/search?keyword=open+access. There are 157 books, and I didn't find one I couldn't download this time till the 12th page, where you cannot "download chapter", but just "view chapter". There are books like this also, like
