That's completely up to your decision.
![]() Do you really need the new features in 5.8.9? (Speaking for me, as I'm only using my Kindle as a good hardware base for reading only offline, public domain, classics primarily either in epub/mobi or PDF format, I'm not interested in "special features" for Kindle native formats and/or Manga books, so 5.8.7 is more than sufficient for me.) If you really need the "new features" and can guarantee to stay always(!) in airplane mode (to avoid unwanted OTA updates, which could break the jb in the future...) and you'll NEVER EVER - even not accidentally - press the "factory reset" button, so you're free to do the update- Your jb will survive - the only thing you have to do is to re-install all kindlets via MRPI. Addendum: If you mean the initial factory version (prerequisite for the jailbreak procedure) you're still running on: Well, it's not recommendable from my point of view to use this for "productive" use. Update to 5.8.7(.0.1) will be the probably most secure way, as you then have the option to redo the jb procedure via downgrading to the initial factory version. Just to be sure...

When looking into my crystall ball, I even suspect that the downgrade protection in the firmwares >5.8.8 is actually only the first step. I fear Amazon in the future could use methods to even prevent the execution of the "emergency script" at the end of an firmware update which is used to launch the "hotfix" code". If this happens, a jb will no longer survive an update. And, BTW, @knc1: This would require no changes to the user directory. The /mkk/* (i.e. "jb hotfix") content will not be affected in any way - it would simply no longer be executed automagically after a fw update. Result: Kindle lost the jb.
![]() Hopefully, Amazon would never do this - but who knows?! Gesendet von meinem Google Pixel mit Yabba-Dabba-Talk. ![]() |

They probably will think of it, now that you have reminded them.

Don't expect me to have given them a tip to do the downgrade blocking in fw 5.8.8... They know themselves what to do with what timeline.
Amazon makes money just with selling ebooks, not with the hardware. You shold know this better than me: Rockefeller's principle: Give away the lamp, then sell the oil. Actually, I always was very surprised (and happy, too! ![]() ![]() Gesendet von meinem Google Pixel mit Yabba-Dabba-Talk. ![]() |

Hello, everyone. Good afternoon to everybody.
This is my first post on the forum, so I'd like to start thanking each one of you who puts so much effort to make possible for us, the users with so little knowledge of these things, to enjoy the nice tools and addons you create. So ![]() I'd like to ask something too, so let me explain a little bit first. I have a KT3 that was successfully jailbroken, and that I unfortunately upgraded to 5.8.9. ![]() Everything runs great, but yesterday an horizontal gray line appeared across its screen. This line won't go away, so since the device is still on warranty I considered sending it back to Amazon. Today I called them to check about the usual proceedings and the second thing they asked for (the 1st being the proverbial restart ![]() The actual question is: is there a way that I can send them the device without traces of it being jailbroken before? I searched through this thread and pieced together that 2 things must be done: 1) Actually reset the device; 2) Perform a software update. Is this right, or am I mistaken and there's no way of "wiping" all the traces of the jb? Also, if I'm actually right, the only way I have of upgrading the software is to wait for 5.8.10 to be released, since there's no way of downgrading my unfortunate version anymore (is this also right?). I hope I'm not bothering you too much, and assure you that I tried my best to search the thread thoroughly, but apologize if I let the answer to this pass me by. |

I think you only have to RESET the kindle, to remove all traces of the jailbreak. You don't need a software upgrade; that's only needed when you install the "factory software" needed to do the jailbreak. You then immediately install a "user level" software, so any of those is safe to send back to amazon. But you aren't doing that now; just resetting.
So: just the RESET. That *will* remove the jailbreak, and since you are at software 5.8.9, you can no longer install a jailbreak after that. But, if you wind up returning it, that won't matter anyway. If you don't wind up returning ig, but it fixes your problem .... well, no jailbreak, but no line across the screen. |

Thanks for your reply, badgoodDeb! But the thing is knc1 said this on the post #1420:
"A complete reset does not remove the jail break certificate. Nor any of the changes made to the Amazon portion of the system image." This was a reply to an user that performed only the reset in his device and sent it back to Amazon. This user hinted that he actually was going to receive a replacement the same day (which would mean he "fooled" them just with that), but I don't think we can know for sure since he did not report back. |

Ok; I'll wait for knc1's more expert opinion. I'm not at all certain.

The "survival code" that bridges the jb certificate across updates lives in the 'not visible to user' user area, which you just erased with 'reset'. Now the only thing(s) left that are different from what Amazon intended in the system image is our signature certificate (also called the "jailbreak"). It is about 250 bytes, they will never notice it, or if they do, they have never refused service because of it. NOTE: Pressing 'reset' does not remove our signature certificate! That means the device is still "jailbroken". If you DO NOT install an update image, you can restore the "survival code" by installing the package with MrPI (after you reinstall MrPI, KUAL, ...). OK knc1, I guess I understood it a little bit better now.
I'll reset the device and try to have it replaced if the line is still there. Thanks a lot for the help and for everything else ![]() |

Yes, I know it is 5.8.9 - but our signature certificate is still there. If the lines are anything like: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...5&postcount=10 they are not going to go away. |

Yes, it's just like that middle line, except mine is horizontal.
I have to say that neither noses nor any body parts except fingers ever touched that screen, though ![]() It never fell or anything either, so I have no idea of what caused it. It's a pretty new device, ain't had it for 2 months yet. (I do use one of those covers that put the kindle to sleep, but I don't think it was that). |

It is possible that it a hardware failure since you can't guarantee it has never been dropped or had another box on top of it. Note, you said it was less than 2 months old and I am assuming it was shipped at some point in time or other. Stress fractures can take a bit to show up. |
