$3.98 is a better return than a single $1.99! They did it because they CAN, and people will likely buy it anyway!

Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children
No Solicitations
No Visitors
No Quests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things.

No matter the cost.

That's a good discount. Thanks for postiing.

But this month I think I'll get the bundle from Baen. There are four books in it that I want, so that makes it a better deal even than this.

X-link to the Mystery megathread for a discounted mystery/suspense thriller set in an alternate history, if you think you might be interested:

The Darkest Hour by Tony Schumacher, which is set in a 1946 after the Nazis have invaded Britain, where a British detective must now work with the SS, investigating crimes in the new regime, similar to Len Deighton's SS-GB and Jo Walton's Small Change trilogy.

Lock In by John Scalzi has dropped to £0.99 at the UK Kindle store. I don't know how long this will last.

"Fifteen years from now, a new virus sweeps the globe. 95% of those afflicted experience nothing worse than fever and headaches. 4% suffer acute meningitis, creating the largest medical crisis in history. And 1% find themselves 'locked in' - fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus.

1% doesn't seem like a lot. But in the US that's 1.7 million people 'locked in' ... including the President's wife and daughter.

Spurred by grief and the sheer magnitude of the suffering, America undertakes a massive scientific initiative. Nothing can fully restore the locked in. But then two new technologies emerge. One is a virtual-reality environment, 'The Agora', where the locked-in can interact with other humans, whether locked-in ornot. The other is the discovery that a few rare individuals have brains that are receptive to being controlled by others, allowing those who are locked in to occasionally 'ride' these people and use their bodies as if they were their own.

This skill is quickly regulated, licensed, bonded, and controlled. Nothing can go wrong. Certainly nobody would be tempted to misuse it, for murder, for political power, or worse ..."

It *seems* to be available at Kobo for €0.99 - at least one version, and not everywhere (not in Canada, but in Austria).)

https://www.kobo.com/at/de/ebook/lock-in-1 <- 0.99
https://www.kobo.com/at/de/ebook/lock-in-2 <- 7.19

I must be missing something obvious, because one edition has 272 pages, the other 307.

[edit]The difference is the more expensive one has an excerpt of The Collapsing Empire, apparently?

Bargain @ $2.99 from Tor Books in Canada & presumably the US (should be the same price in all the usual stores):

About 10 or so novels from their authors are on sale as part of the Kindle Daily Deal for April 27th, and the Kobo listing shows several more which are presumably part of a longer-term markdown rather than a flash offer.

Too many to link individually, but here's the Kindle Daily Deal page, and Kobo's listing for all their Tor Books titles priced at $2.99 CAD (some short stories from Tor.com and serials included)

ETA 2: Turns out it is for today only, as indicated by the Kobo CA promo banner on the front page, and here is their official link to just the eligible titles: Today only: Out-of-this-World Sci-Fi for $2.99

Authors in the Kindle Daily Deal include Jo Walton (Among Others), Dave Duncan (1st in a new series), Peter Watts (Blindsight), Robert J. Sawyer (Hominids, 1st in his award-winning Neanderthal Parallax trilogy; overall I liked it but didn't feel it quite lived up to the best of his work, YMMV), Steven Erikson (2 novels from different series), Robert Charles Wilson (2 novels from different series), Madeline Ashby (Company Town), A. M. Dellamonica (A Daughter of No Nation). (ETA: I just noticed these are all Canadian or Canada-resident authors, so maybe there's some sort of theme promo going on.)

Additional authors at Kobo (also matched at Amazon, but not part of their promo): Max Gladstone (5 novels in the Craft Sequence series), Rick Wilber (Alien Morning). NB: the volume of Chrysanthe by award-winning Quebecois author Yves Menard is, despite its 300+ page length, just a serial installment. The full novel is here at 900+ pages, and at $8.99, still cheaper than getting the separate serial installments.

If you're cheap, you can get Peter Watts' Blindsight for free at his website.

Max Gladstone's Craft Sequence is one of the series up for the series Hugo award, so if you're a Hugo Award voter, and you don't have any of the series, it might be worth it to pick up the omnibus for $12, pick up the the individual ones you don't have for $2.99, or pre-order the next in the series for $2.99, or you can hope that some or all of them will be in the Hugo packet. I'm not sure if they're just on sale again or if they've been on sale since 2/7, when I bought the one I don't have, and preordered the one due out in September.

The three books in The Rho Agenda by Richard Phillips are $2 each at Amazon US. Anybody read these? For this price, I may take a chance. Reviews on amazon (over 2000 for first book) seem mostly positive.

I have Shadow's Blade from an earlier bundle (still unread). But I suppose I can count it as five that I'm interested in now.

I've read the first two. I have the third, but just couldn't bring myself to read it. I wanted to like the books, but I personally found them childish.

I think this paranormal/alien/supernatural genre isn't really my cup of tea, so that could be part of it.
