Any user who wants a link to the newer firmware is welcome to type the additional: ".0.1" into the url for 5.8.7 How to download firmware packages from Amazon that are older than current is one of the FGA (frequently given answers). Quote:
Are you posting that I wasted my time typing the details of step #7 ? Of course airplane mode prevents updates, but step #7 update blocking is (was) still working as described. With one disclaimer further into the thread. |

Hmmm, AFAIK simply creating the read-only OTA update prevention directory does no longer work with >5.8.5 or so?! At least I remember to get an auto download of 5.8.6 or so after I simply switched Wifi temporarily on just to autosync the clock, despite having this temp dir correctly created. It was gone after that download, btw. Though definitely set to read-only!
And who knows definitely whether 5.8.7.0.1 on PW3 and KT3 may be downgraded to the respective initial versions or not? Hopefully, I didn't make a mistake in updating both my touch Kindles deliberately to exactly this version, hoping still to be able to downgrade them later if really needed (e.g. in case of a repair)... BUT ... earlier, when you said "the jailbreak did not survive" .... you do realize that after any update, you must re-install all the tools you want to use? *Only* the hidden-to-you actual jailbreak survives. If you did not reinstall your KUAL or screensaver hack, or whatever you use -- then you do not actually know if the jailbreak was present. But that reset --- yeah, that removed the jailbreak. And there's no reversing now, since 5.8.8 or 5.8.9 cannot (yet?) be jailbroken. Dunno if this clarifies or not, but I thought I'd try ..... |

And if you did not use the test package attached to the first post, the one that is intended to tell you if the jailbreak is still present ....

Hi there
I am about to start the JB process and was a bit surprised by the result of the Serial Number Nicknames table. I own a 7th generation white kindle bought in Europe in december 2015, its seral number starts with 90DD and the table identify it as a "Kindle Basic (2014) (Australia)". It sounds a bit strange and I thought it was worth mentioning it... |

What version firmware was on it when you took it out of the box? - - - - Anything that sat for a year in OZ land without being sold sounds like a prime target to be dump'd onto the European market. And if they don't sell there, just watch, they will show up in Russia next. The theory is: put enough fermented potato squeezings into a Russian and they will buy anything. ![]() (My apologies here and now to our Russian members.) Edit: I see that knc1 and others have commented your posts... So, hoping to make it clearer.
So yes, you are now screwed, but you weren't after fw upgrade. If only you had read all the instructions... that's a shame! Last edited by Ruskie_it; 04-21-2017 at 01:01 AM. Reason: Read other posts |

As cqwang hisself stated that he "did device reset" after manually updarting to 5.8.9, the jb is really gone and he is lost now...
Well, he didn't read the fascinating manual in post #1. What definitely is a MUST do. Never ever do a device reset after successfully jailbreaking. Never!! Whatever happens... Gesendet von meinem Google Pixel mit Yabba-Dabba-Talk. ![]() |

As far as I know, they do not repair your Kindle. They send you one new (latest version) at a discounted price, and that's it. Of course, you get it upgraded to the latest version - more or less. |

And I don't get the point for b): if you are not going to upgrade anyway, there is no need for you to be able to downgrade. So, it is sufficient that you never do device reset, whatever fw version you are. |

I had once helped a friend of mine jailbreaking his PW3. Everything was fine. It was the time around when version 5.8.5 or so was the latest. Installed this for hin. Then this guy hadn't correctly read my lips ... an did a factory reset! ![]() Apropos repair: Well, maybe this is a peculiarity here in Good Old Germany; but you can also buy Kindle readers directly in electronic marts "cash-and-carry", not only via Amazon. I've bought ALL my Kindles that way, saving the shipping costs. And in in case of a defect you have two options: 1) If bought less than 2 weeks ago: They will replace the device "no questions asked". (More correctly: they refund it and you're free to choose either the cashback, or buy another device. This could be especially interesting if there is a bargain offer like "Kindle xy 40,- Euros off now!" and you happened to buy it a few days ago for the old price: you can then get the old price refunded and just buy a new one for the reduced costs. ![]() 2) If bought more than 14 days ago: They send it in for repair. And than it could happen that they don't do the replacement/repair when recognizing that the device is "modified": this voids any warranty.... |

My PW1 has been stolen with the bag it was in (and along with the rest). Hope they may suffer. A LOT. After casting all possible curses in any possible language invoking any possible god or demon, I've then bought a PW3 (and a new bag... and the rest). It has arrived today. Luckily it shipped with firmware 5.8.7.0.1. I've followed the directions of this post: downgraded it to 5.7.4, successfully applied jailbreak, installed survival code and upgraded it back to 5.8.7.0.1.
Everything worked like a charm. This message is just to say: thank you very much. Just a note on the "Testing (touchscreen devices listed in title)" section. When you write "If you do not have a /mrpackages on the visible root of your kindle, you either have a damaged JB or the JB was never installed" you should add "or you've not (yet) performed step #8". |

![]() ![]() ![]() That's exactly what I wanted to know: 5.8.7.0.1 is downgradeable on a PW3! (And hopefully on a KT3 too...) |

5.8.7.0.1 < 5.8.8 In words, when increasing digits indicate the same sequence as time passing, 5.8.7.0.1 was released prior to 5.8.8 Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_versioning Where, as used by Amazon/Lab126, the period does not represent a decimal point; it is only a field separator. Come on people, this is not rocket science.* Anyone with more than one finger or toe and who can count should be able to figure this out.** (*) Although rocket science often uses a different versioning scheme. (**) People with less than one finger or toe should probably not be using a touchscreen device, let alone modifying it. Note: If you are unable to determine how many fingers and/or toes you have ... You need help that is not available here. Last edited by knc1; 04-21-2017 at 08:49 AM. |

Sorry, I really can't get your point now. Certainly my native language isn't English and - as always - it's much easier for non native speakers to read than to write in a foreign language. But of course I know what "prior to" means and (as a software engineer) also know lots about version numbering.
I was referring strictly and only to your following statement; I emphasize the relevant part in red just to make sure: Quote:
Your last posting here suggests that you "of course" knew that already too. Why your posting cited above then? Did you know it already before the confirmation by pirl8 in his last posting here, or not? ![]() |
