{. . .} the fact that it is published by Westminster University Press (I had never heard of it before; it has a total of two books in its Open Access catalog at the present time, but it looks like that's going to grow a lot in the near future), which I assume is in Great Britain somewhere, so the perspective of the book may be on Great Britain. We Yanks may not be mentioned much in the book.

The only context in which a book about the Royal Navy (not British Navy, please ) between 1700 and 1850 is going to mention the United States is as an enemy.

There are some "Westminsters" in the U.S., too. There are several towns, and a denomination called Westminster Presbyterian Church. Probably some other things, too. Those just showed up in the first couple of pages of the results of a Google search. But I knew that odds were that it was in Great Britain somewhere. I didn't see any in Florida. ha

BTW--many people in the U.S., especially those who have not visited G.B. have a penchant for saying "Westminister. I cringe when people say it, but don't correct them. Now, if I knew that they were about to take a trip over there, that might be different. Wouldn't want the Brits to talk about how ignorant the Yanks are.

Correct appellation of the navy in Great Britain duly noted.

I was actually only intending to use "British Navy" as a possessive, however--"the navy of Great Britain"--not as the name. But I did not know that "Royal Navy" was the precise name. Oddly, I do recall, for some reason, that the marines are the Royal Marines.

The most famous academic Westminster in the US is Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., where Churchill coined the phrase "Iron Curtain" in 1946.

I have never heard an American say "Westminister."

Thanks for the info. I love the ocean and ships and navies, but have been a landlubber all of my life. On top of that, I like Western history, in general. I'm looking forward to reading this book.

You know, I kept thinking that there was an institution of higher learning somewhere in the U.S. by that name, but my quick Googling of "Westminster" didn't reveal it.

Glad to hear that. The average Southerner, is probably not as well educated as the typical Northerner, though (note that I did not say "inherently less intelligent"). I've lived in the South all of my life. You wouldn't believe some of the things that I've heard my fellow Southerners say in ignorance. But this is not the forum for elaborating on that.

So, to be more precise, I should not have said "many in the U.S. . . . " There may be "many in the deep South," but I really think that I would have been overstating things even then.
