This looks like a book that stands apart from the ordinary. That's one of my main reasons for posting it. And it has the requisite low price/large markdown at $1.99/86%.
The Trees in My Forest. By Bernd Heinrich. The only criticism that I can find concerning the book is that the "forest" seems to be limited to the New England states. However, this observation is only from the preview, and a cursory look at it at that. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000U913OI. |

The Grand Tour by Geoffrey Trease Drawing on travel books and diaries spanning four hundred years, Geoffrey Trease illustrates the fascinating journey of the European Grand Tour. This was a tradition rich with history from Elizabethan times down to the middle of the nineteenth century and the later introduction of railroads and tourism. With tours often lasting as long as three or four years, they were sine qua non for the scions of the richest and most powerful British families. Originally intended to supply young aristocrats with a proper background for statecraft and diplomacy — occasionally for espionage — the Grand Tour developed into an event of considerable cultural and educational significance. Finally, by the middle of the eighteenth century, it had transformed into a social convention. Wherever grand tourists went, by boat, barge, coach, horseback, sedan chair, and even by foot, they never forgot they were Englishmen. First published in 1967 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston. reprint by The Odyssey Press Geoffrey Trease (1909-1998) was the author of more than one hundred books, including children’s books. He revolutionised children’s literature and was one of the first authors to deliberately appeal to both boys and girls through strong leading characters of both genders. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XKQ49Y4/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XKQ49Y4/ https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B06XKQ49Y4/ |

I know that I don't share the interest in fiction that a lot of MobileReaders do, but sometimes I think that MobileReaders don't share the interest in particular non-fiction titles do (I still hold out hope for them. ha), either. Possible case in point:
The Ice Diaries: The True Story of One of Mankind's Greatest Adventures. By Captain William R. Anderson. 4.7 stars (29) at Amazon. Packed with new insight, this detailed book looks back on the USS Nautilus, a nuclear-powered submarine tasked with exploring the waters beneath the Arctic ice cap during the Cold War. Only 99 cents right now, meaning that you pay only 10% of the digital list price! https://www.amazon.com/Ice-Diaries-M.../dp/B007FZXKLE. |

Ignore the "A Teacher's Sourcebook for," before the reminder of the title: Japanese Art and Culture. This is a great, little (48-page), colorful booklet packed with information about a country that I know little about.
It features "the Japanese Art Collection of the Peabody Essex Museum" in Salem, Massachusetts. Price: free. A definite keeper. http://www.pem.org/aux/pdf/learn/asi.../japan-tsb.pdf. |

Thanks, also, for adding the information about the author. This is a subject area of which I have low interest, so I was not familiar with the gentleman. In this case, as in many, it was the combination of low price/high markdown and exceptional ratings that attracted my attention. |

Get, via Open Access, a free copy of Naval Leadership in the Atlantic World: The Age of Reform and Revolution, 1700–1850. By Richard Harding (editor) and Agustín Guimerá (editor).
This is an academic-type book (Open Access books tend to be of that type, and also to be ones that are definitely scholarly), but it is not hard to read (though it's not casual-type reading, either). Almost brand new (2016), so there are no ratings to speak of yet. The least expensive copy at Amazon is a new paperback, for $24.99. And, as far as I can tell, no digital format is available at all there. Through Open Access, however, it's available in mobi, ePub, and PDF. https://unglue.it/. I am glad that I was correct, apparently, about the "New England" remark that I made. I don't have time, of course, to read and vet every ebook that I'm thinking about posting. But that appeared to be correct based upon my cursory look through it. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-20-2017 at 01:27 PM. |

ADDENDUM to my post #251:
It occurs to me that the free Open Access book that I mentioned may only be about the British navy, or at least have its focus on it. As I mentioned to bfisher in my post just above this one, I don't have time to read and vet every ebook that I'm thinking about posting. However, I thought about the fact that it is published by Westminster University Press (I had never heard of it before; it has a total of two books in its Open Access catalog at the present time, but it looks like that's going to grow a lot in the near future), which I assume is in Great Britain somewhere, so the perspective of the book may be on Great Britain. We Yanks may not be mentioned much in the book. Trivia: most everything that we hear about Henry VIII is negative. However, one very good thing that he did for Great Britain is to substantially build up her navy. His actions were one big reason that Britannia ruled the waves for some 400 or so years.
