You are more likely to find me on cookingbytes . Where we, in the software world, not satisfied with the problems of a single language, keep making up new ones just to keep it interesting.

I'm Australian and wouldn't use "falsies" for teeth - my first thought, reading that, would be a padded bra. If you don't want to say "dentures", why not just "false teeth"?

If I remember correctly (from my lounge vs sofa thread of a very similar nature) you're from the west. It seems that east and west are far enough apart to be evolving independent dialects - or maybe I'm so isolated that I'm evolving my own

Changing the phrasing was not really the problem, it was understanding that it might be necessary.

Maybe it's a gender thing. My first thought on reading "falsies" was teeth, my second was breasts.
In the UK, sausages are called "bangers", so: throw another banger on the Barbie. Poor Barbie!

You are really messing with the language. I think Barbie is Australian. Though the thought sure made me giggle.

Oh and I am also female and I certainly didn't think teeth when I read falsies.
I thought of padding.

Then maybe it's because I'm a female Brit. Who knows?

I was thinking the way one was raised. I don't think gender has anything to do with how one interprets something.
Well with the exception of certain males but those think with the wrong head.
But please always say it is because you are female.
You mention your gender every time you post.
Yet, you thought I was male because I didn't agree with you on something you wrote.
Hey guess what, not all females think alike.

Twenty or thirty years ago, I would have said teeth. Now my first thought is breasts.

Definitely Padding

Take out my 'Choppers' was in use when I was younger.

Most certainly a regional usage.

I am ashamed (well, disappointed anyway) to say that I've written very little on this project since I started this discussion. Damn work! But the "falsies" are gone. (I chose the big grin to show off the teeth )

In this instance the only reason I mentioned gender is because men have breasts and sex continually on their minds, at least in my experience. On the other occasion, it was because the novel was of greater appeal to women 40+ than to men or younger women (the menopause is a main feature of that book and is quite graphically described). I don't have gender on the brain, I just think that men immediately jump to different interpretations of words. When I was much younger, a male friend explained to me that the word "fun" meant something very different to a man than to women.

Can you please not use that m word? Just teasing. Or give me the title of that novel. Note I am 50+.
I do tend to forget I'm not a normal thinking female.

Heh.

I thought "false eyelashes". Then boobs. Then teeth.

Re the shrimp on the barbie thing, I always thought the point was sort of a "things are big in Aussie" thing that was going on back around the Crocodile Dundee days. Playing off "That's not a knife, THIS is a knife" and he hauls out a huge one. Shrimps are tiny, if you threw one on a barbecue grill, it'd fall right through... unless it was a huge Australian one.

Actually, I just went and found the ad since I haven't seen it in over 30 years, and sure enough that thing he holds up at the very end when he says it is quite a bit bigger than any shrimp I've ever seen.
