Or if they where reading one of the translations of the first post on another site.
The first post has been translated into a respectable number of languages last I checked.
(some very good, some not so good)

I have a Kindle Voyage with firmware version 5.8.8 and I would like to do a jailbreak starting with a downgrade with "update_KV_5.5.0_initial.bin".

I put this file at the root, close to the folder "document" and I restart.

Nothing happens and the file disappears.
Where is the error?

You did not read the first sentence of the first post and your Kindle is not running a firmware version prior to 5.8.8

It has happened before, where the protection against a certain jail break skips one or more firmware versions. That is just an artifact of Amazon/Lab126's build system and the way they maintain their changes.

One long standing example is firmware version 5.6.1.1 -
The build for PW-3 included downgrade protection.
The build for PW-1 did not (and does not) include downgrade protection.
(Different SoC device models and the DGA protection wasn't ported to the PW-1 build system. Mistakes happen. If Amazon was concerned they would release a 5.6.1.2 for the PW-1.)

But we do not know that for sure.

It may work on 5.8.9.0.0.1 or 5.8.10 or anything higher than what it is now known not to work on.

I will update Step #4 to explain what a disappearing file means.
I already caution people that step might take a long time.
I might as well tell them about when it seems to be instantaneous.

KOA WIFI here, initially succeeded all the way through step#0 to #8, had a working jb/hotfix/KUAL/screensaver running 5.8.7

Then I downloaded 5.8.9 from amazon and manually updated, the jb did NOT survive.

attempted hotfix again, got error message about invalid update or something.

did device reset.

Now I'm stuck with a 5.8.9 device, attempted factory image (step#4), the file just disappears from kindle.

Am I permanently screwed up?

Why do you say the jb does not survive? How are you sure about it?
Is it because the hacks you had installed before the upgrade to 5.8.9 do not work anymore?

As a newly registered user of this forum from Germany, I want at first express my gratitude for your very valuable howtos and tips about jailbreaking all my Kindles (from 2011 starting with a K4NT gray, over a PW3 to a recent KT3 Basic).

I've all the time over used all of these devices in offline mode only, i.e. have never been "really" using an Amazon account. I prefer reading free/public domain classics and/or PDFs (especially scans from Google Books and other sources) on these devices. Most of them are in EPUB format (I even have some very old Palm PRC files from about 1998... ) - that's why JB is so essential for me... My favorite reader is, BTW, CoolReader (the CrazyCoder build on NT4, and the Vlasovsoft touchscreen-optimized port on PW3 and KT3), but I also use KOReader from time to time. Great tools making a great piece of hardware even greater!

I've a suggestion concerning the first posting here:

a) You should set links to the very last firmware version 5.8.7.0.1 that allows downgrading for all touch kindles instead of 5.8.7.

b) Additionally you should recommend that "standard offline users" like me should update to 5.8.7.0.1 after jailbreaking and avoid any further updating by leaving the device in airplane mode. This will keep the chances high to re-jailbreak such a device later on. In other words: Updating to 5.8.8 and later is not recommended in that case, though an already applied jb would survive these updates.

yes, all the jb/hacks stopped working after upgrading to 5.8.9, and trying to install the survive hotfix again resulted the invalid update error message.

is there anyway to downgrade and factory image jb now?

Not when already running 5.8.8 or 5.8.9. Unfortunately, you're completely out of luck. You should never ever have updated to a version above 5.8.7.0.1.

alrighty, KOA running 5.8.7 with jb/hotfix won't survive 5.8.9, op please add a warning about this.

It does survive.
It is a case of you vs. tens of thousands of successes, translation: there was a 'local to you' problem*.

If you carefully compare the details you included in your post with the directions, you will find your errors.
Put them in two windows, side by side, you'll find them (there was more than one).

The ability to follow directions is the minimum required skill to use our add-ins, so it is best that you intentionally erased our jailbreak.

(*) Sometimes called: PEBKAC or "you screwed up".
But people often object to my being "too blunt".
