Boox M92 neglected for over 3 years won't start

Hi guys

I am packing for sunny vacation and I wanted something that will allow me to read under intense sun light and I thought that my old Boox would help so I tried to recharge it but it won't start

I tried to hold the back reset button pressed for 5 seconds and then the power button but it won't start. The screen if frozen showing Recent readings and the clock in the top left corner

What else can I do ?

If the battery hasn't been recharged during 3 years it most likely has died due to too extended power drain. Try to get hold of a replacement battery somewhere.

Exactly. Your battery will be as dead as a doornail after three years.

I recently replaced a battery in a cheap tablet. Had to open up the back of it to find out what size of battery it needed. Then typed that into Google. Found a replacement battery on eBay. However, as it shipped from China, it took a while to get to me. But it did come and it did work. Aliexpress.com would be another option for replacement batteries.

I think I will do the same
These must be common batteries I think
Shouldn't the device still work if connected to an USB port ?

Not necessarily so. The battery in my cheapo tablet wouldn't hold a charge. Initially, I wasn't too worried. Thought I could just plug it into a wall charger and use it that way. But it kept trying to charge the battery and would not turn on the tablet until there was a minimum amount of charge in the battery and it would take a very long time to get it to that point. That's when I decided to try changing the battery... It now works fine.

there must be an electrical way to fool the voltage or the current sensor so you can work with the device plugged in without a batery

Depends how it's wired up. Some devices (eg most laptops) have external power going directly to the motherboard, which then also charges the battery. They'll work fine with no battery. Other devices, however, have external power going to the battery, and then the battery powering the motherboard. They won't work with a dead battery.

Do you know which is the case for e-readers? Can one run an e-reader of an external power-source if the battery is dead?

Unfortunately it seems that most ereaders are of the "the power charges the battery, then the battery powers the motherboard" variety.

Ouch. Thanks.

Do you think an e-reader would last longer if constantly connected to a power source (so presumably not using the battery), or if it would last longer if the battery was used, then regularly topped up by external power? An odd question, I know.

Not a good idea to leave any battery permanently on charge. Battery chemistry works best (ie longest) with regular discharge/recharge cycles.

All you need is a converter which will probably be cheaper than the battery.

Some vendors of batteries have a 'booster' for this type of situation, you could try even if three years is a very, very long delay.
