Oh, another question that I had was about the tiny size of the text. I haven't downloaded any of it, yet, and am wondering if a downloaded copy with be full size, or tiny like the preview.

Thanks for your post.

archive.org has updated Ellul's "The Presence of the Kingdom" to all formats (kindle, epub, full text, etc).
https://archive.org/details/ThePrese...omJacquesEllul

In The Presence of the Kingdom, Jacques Ellul says that "the Christian should neither withdraw from the world, nor be lost in the midst of the world. Instead, the Christian should bring the reign of God and the world into collision."

Contrary to advocating withdrawal from the world or urging a lifeboat, Ellul challenges us to embrace and preserve the world. God alone will effect our separation in hi own time. This resolute engagement requires a dialectical and antagonistic style of life which remain very much in the world even as it rejects worldliness. To be in the world also requires us to understand it in both its material and spiritual aspects, a task Ellul has undertaken in his sociological and theological works and which he challenges us to better. By rejecting the twin perils of spiritualization (which neglect material realities) and capitulation (which simply adopts one of the world's many different options that appears to harmonize with Christianity), the Christian plays a truly creative role and gives meaning and direction to history, which otherwise has no logic or certitude.

Authentic Christian existence trusts in the power of the Holy Spirit to give our "presence" a revolution and explosive force in history.

Thanks. It is hard for me to find information like that, and information about books not yet in the public domain that the Internet Archive has managed to get the copyright holder to let the Archive publish anyway (just an impression: it seems like there are a huge amount of them).

One of these days, I'm going to dig around on the Internet and see if I can't find a regularly-updated list of such books somewhere. I'm on one (maybe it's the only one) of Internet Archives' mailing lists, but I never see information, like you've given, on the newsletter.

this particular book is only the introduction which was placed in the public domain to get it into the archive. The book itself is not there. There are many like this as a way to advertise.

Sorry for that. . . again it appears that only the PDF format has the book in full.

It's been a while since any new study Bibles have excited me, but a couple have.

The NIV Proclamation Bible: Correctly Handling the Word of Truth is $2.99. This one doesn't have study notes, but the articles and book introductions look interesting enough for $3. I don't recall seeing it on sale before.

The The NIV Zondervan Study Bible is on sale for $6.99. This one has been on sale before, and in fact, I already bought it. I bought it again, though, because it turns out that both Bibles are available as PDF at eBooks.com, which I much prefer when reading on a PC. Since Bibles are one of the things that I read on a PC most often, I sprang for the second copy.

If you buy either Bible at eBooks.com, you can download both the epub and PDF files to ADE. Alf's tools will take care of them, but note that there's a bug in the current version that causes it to fail with the Zondervan Study Bible PDF. I fixed the bug on my own setup, though, and submitted a bug report with enough detail that hopefully the official release should be fixed soon.

The Proclamation Bible
The Zondervan Study Bible

Or, if you only want one format, there's Amazon

On another note, I just figured out (though I'm probably late to the party) a cool feature of Calibre's epub reader that's useful for study Bibles. Recent versions of the epub reader are smart enough to figure out when you're clicking on footnotes and it opens the footnotes in a second window. Since other epub software makes you flip back and forth between the verses and the notes, it's sometimes hard to read them effectively. If you want to try it out, go to Preferences->Behavior. Under "use internal viewer for:" check the box for EPUB.

That handy feature doesn't work with all of my Bibles, but it does with most of them and especially the newer ones. If, like me, you've been using ADE to read your Bibles, then it's worth the switch.

Glad to see a post from you again. And you always have some really high-quality ones. Some of us don't, so we substitute quantity for quality. ha

I keep forgetting about the nice perk from ebooks.com of getting two formats for the price of one. I like to have backups, insurance, or whatever you want to call it of having every ebook in at least two formats. I am pretty well committed to Amazon, but I have a lot of stuff in both ePub and PDF, so maybe not getting the mobi won't be a big issue. And, of course, if I want mobi and another format, I've got to make a purchase of two ebooks, instead of one purchase with ebooks.com.

Thanks for the heads up. Competitive pressures being what they are, I wouldn't be surprised if Adobe didn't add that feature in one of its upcoming upgrades. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I found out that I made an assumption that I shouldn't have, and that my memory was faulty, about the ebooks.com formats. From ebook.com:
Although we suggest different formats for different devices, it is worth noting that some books are only available in only one format. Even if it is not the recommended format for your device, this does not mean that you will not be able to read the book perfectly well! Also the Online Reader is always another option.

What I haven't been able to determine yet is how a person can know if a particular book has two or just one format(s) included in the price. I'll keep looking around the website. There was an ebook that I was considering buying from them, in part because of thinking that I could get two formats for the price of one. If none of you guys responds first, I'll let the rest of you know what I find out.

I should have explained that. The listing for each individual book will tell you which formats are available. To the right of the "Add to cart" button and below the ISBN, there is a line that lists available formats.

The NIV Study Bible, for example, can be read using their online reader or downloaded as an epub, but isn't available as a PDF. The description looks like this:

The Zondervan Study Bible, which is available as a PDF, looks like this:

Very good, thanks. In a nutshell: it's near the end of the book description.

I found that I actually had bought a book from them before; it was in my "library." Happened to be a cookbook that was on sale at Amazon for $1.99 until just a day or two and I debated over and over about buying it. Glad that I didn't now. Sometimes I am jealous of these people who have photographic memories. I've got too many books scattered over too many places. I must start using Calibre or I'm going to get so far behind that I'll never catch up! I'm so far behind now that I can't stand the thought of spending hours and hours on the project. But it's my fault.
