Which is why it's important to do a white balance calibration when taking such a picture. Even better, include a pure white object (such as a sheet of copier paper) in the picture to allow the viewer to make a valid comparison.

ETA: If the room illumination is not neutral then the camera white balance compensation will distort the kindle's color. Of course you need to decide what is neutral. 6500K? 5500K? Last edited by jhowell; 04-05-2017 at 10:36 AM. |

Yes, but if you know that the paper really is white, you can adjust the white balance of the image so that it looks white, and that will then give you a realistic image of the correct colour of the screen, too. That's why, when I take pictures of objects in museums (which have a wide variety of different lighting arrangements) I always start my photo session by taking a picture of a neutral grey card I keep in my camera case for that purpose.

Yes, but using the gray card you are compensating for your light sources. In this case the light source for the white paper is different from the (internal) light source of the kindle.
ETA: For example, if I take two photos one with very warm (red) room illumination and one with very cold (blue) and then I compensate so that the paper is pure white in both cases then the kindle will appear very differently in each picture. Last edited by jhowell; 04-05-2017 at 10:42 AM. |

Perhaps we should have all posters here make measurements using a tristimulus colorimeter.

Or just get the person taking the photos to tell us how accurate they are.

Voice control is even better and it is self-limiting.
When your too out of breath to say: "next", then it is time to stop. Yes, we do have voice control for the KT, but not for any newer models due to lack of a microphone. That could change for the newest models, if someone was interested in doing it. |

There is a great variance between individual Kindles as far as color goes, and that includes the PWs, Voyage, and Oasis models. My Voyage is bluish in tint, but thankfully not as pronounced as the OP's Oasis. Nevertheless, that bluish tint makes my eyes sore after a short time of reading. I tried several PW 1s and a few PW 2s when they first came out. Some were reddish in tint and others were bluish. It was just a matter of the luck of the draw in which you got. Poor quality control IMO. In the end, I have given up on eInk except for reading in bright sunlight which requires no lighting, and quite frankly the lighted Kindles cannot even do that very well because that darn plastic light layer causes many issues even when turned off.

The photo wasnt meant as a calibration reference. Its simply to show how different they appear in relation to each other, where my preference leans to the warmer Kobo.
Again, even with a 100% pure white LED, there is still a lot of blue in the light (about 30%). That is also too much for me. It appears harsh and fluorescent, and in a dark room it makes my eyes go numb. Warm hues however are very pleasant to rest your eyes on for extended time, even in the contrast of a dark room. |

However, I find when using the Kobo I can have a stronger light active without issues, wheres with the Kindle I have to sacrifice text/background contrast with less brightness in order to calm my eyes. And even then it still heavy in the blue department, and simply not very jovial to use. A predated electronical device where the Kobo appears more like a tasteful and contemporary reading device ![]() Last edited by Dino84; 04-05-2017 at 03:40 PM. Reason: Attached is a photo with less device brightness, and brighter room light. |

Having a bright light is not a desirable goal, though. With any reader you should be aiming for the lowest light level that allows you to see the screen clearly. If the screen appears to be "shining", your light is almost certainly set at too high a level.
I must say, BTW, that in the picture in your previous message, my personal preference is for the Kindle screen by far. I would not personally wish to read on an orange screen. Last edited by HarryT; 04-05-2017 at 03:52 PM. |
