Free (nook/Kindle) A Cup of Dust [Xtian 1930s Oklahoma Dust Bowl Literary Suspense]
A Cup of Dust: A Novel of the Dust Bowl by Susie Finkbeiner is a suspenseful and probably also inspirational historical literary fiction example of Exactly What It Says In The Title, set in an Oklahoma small town during the ecologically and economically disastrous Dust Bowl years (Wikipedia), from the POV of a young girl living an ordinary life who encounters a stranger who becomes mysteriously disruptive to her family's life, free courtesy of Christian publisher Kregel.
Currently free, probably just for one day @ B&N (also UK) & Amazon (not available to Canadians, but also free in the UK). May also be free @ Google Play in the US and/or UK, which sometimes but not always gets the Kregel freebies. And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Pretty much by default, but the historical setting dealing with the aftermath of its events does give it a few bonus points, plus I still feel that it's not really quite the time yet to bring out all the Xmas promo stuff anyway, even if it is nice that we're getting some seasonal extra freebies. ![]() Enjoy! Description Ten-year-old Pearl doesn’t understand a lot of things-—why her sister’s brain doesn’t work right, why the preacher yells so much, why Jesus and the president seem to have forgotten all about Oklahoma. But she does know who she is: Pearl Spence, daughter of the esteemed town sheriff. Generous and always ready to help in a crisis, the Spences bring hope to this desolate town, and Pearl is proud of her family. She knows who she is, she knows she is loved, and even in unrelenting hardship, life feels secure. Not even the dust that sweeps incessantly across Red River can quench her hopes and dreams. But someone else seems to know who she is, too, and he makes Pearl uneasy. From the moment the mysterious hobo steps off the train and stares at her with his cold blue eyes, Pearl’s secure world begins to unravel. How does Eddie know her name? Why does he seem to hover everywhere she turns? And why does he act like he knows something about her family that she doesn’t? Pearl is determined to avoid him, but Eddie is bent on forcing his way into her life and disrupting her family’s shaky tranquility. The more he badgers Pearl, the greater her confusion, until the storm within her rivals the swirling of dust and dirt without. Last edited by ATDrake; 11-16-2015 at 10:58 AM. |

Now a repeat freebie in the original stores (newly free to Canadians @ Amazon), and apparently newly free @ Google Play (also available to Canadians).
