Image Guidelines

I think the image guidelines are draconian and need to be repealed and replaced.

Removing an oversized image has gone way overboard and has spoiled the thread given that the OP of the thread hasn't been on since 2013.

This was discussed as recently as last month in the Moderators forum. Kovid Goyal suggested some server-side CSS changes that would address the issue directly.

However, the number of people who can implement such changes is limited

One would hope the long promised new forum format won't have this irritant.

My suggestion would be to try the "Contact Us" route to contact Alex directly. As far as I know he's the only only able to make the kind of change Kovid suggested.

What was it Kovid suggested?

What i would like is an option to allow us to see images in full size or to see them in reduced size with the ability to click the image to see them in full size. That way, everyone is happy and no more removing images from years ago.

Has anyone noticed just how few graphics on the web are under 600 x 600? It's why these days I usually resort to attachments rather than direct links. So much of what I do these days is via iPad, and browsers working with iPad don't let you know the size of the graphic you're uploading. It's somewhat of a pain. I also would like to see changes made in the code.

I've been saying that for some time. But now I've sort of changed my mind. I'm for resizing but also allowing to see the full size. Sometimes it's better with the full size image.

Yes, I agree it's not always easy to see the size of the images. Plus, then we have to download and resize or attach. Most people have broadband. So given that, I don't see why we still need a 600x600 limitation.

But another thing I have a big issue with is the taking down of larger images where without them, the thread is worthless. I think if a mod can take the time to delete the images and then post about it that there is no reason why the mod cannot attach the images instead.

I agree, the resizing via html that was suggested allows someone to still view the raw image at full size.

We'll have to see how images are implemented in the new forum software (if I'm still around when it is finally implemented.)

Have you any idea how much effort it takes to transfer images from some porn infested image host into MR attachments and get the thumbnails placed into the original post in their original position.

To delete an image is one click, to post a too big message is 6 keystrokes.

For me the issue with big images is horizontal scrolling.

One thing at least could very easily be changed: posts that are older than since it was activaly enforced (like the post that John posted) should not be changed.

In this case the post was actually necro'd to remove the too large image!

I still don't see what is wrong using the Attachment route. That shows a thumbnail that fits all but the tiniest screens and if the user want more, click.

The user also get to see as a Slide show (click next arrow in the view)

The way I look at it, if you want to have control on MR, then you do the work. If you want to take the lazy way out, then give up control. An image you see in the message has already been downloaded from were it came from. So you right click, select to save the image, delete the image, upload as an attachment and be done. Not a problem as I see it.

The rules say 600x600 max, so it's up to the poster to find the right size. It's not difficult to find an image smaller than 600x600.

I haven't found a way to determine the size of any graphics on my iPad.
