You keep saying that. This is my suggestion, no need to shoot me down like that. Alright?

Personally, I agree with you because I only use my KOBO reader for reading. But I also see the point of view of those who say "you'll never get that."

However, it would suit me to a tee if there was a way to read with only three small areas of touch on the screen:
1. One small area to unlock the rest of the screen and to use all the regular features.
2. One small area to page forward.
3. One small area to page backward.

By the way, that first option is the work-around for all those people who want to do all that other stuff with their e-reader.

I yearn for the good old days where there was (hardware) dedicated buttons to page forward and back.

I agree, and would like to see it configurable (not just another touch zone in the current options).

I think one of the alternate reading apps (coolreader or koreader) allows it.

I would assume you simply unlock the screen in order to read them. Footnote heavy books might not be the best candidate for having such a setting turned on.
Personally, the only books I have with footnotes really, are the Discworld series by the late good Mr Pratchett.

By the way, its nice to see others who agree with such a feature!

Just to mention, in case you don't know (although you maybe just don't want to bother yourself with it), with koreader you can define your touch zones to your liking.

In your case you can, for example make active only small part of screen to start whatever you like (next or previous page, menu...). Rest of the screen, even if touched wouldn't produce any action as no action is associated with that part.

It wouldn't work as screen lock, as settings would be always that particular way you programmed them (at least till you change settings to react to new touch zones).

Thanks! I gave that a glance earlier today. Definitely interested in that. However it seems slightly complicated. And Im not sure if itinvolves getting rid of stuff like the comfort light. Not quite sure where to begin.

.
No. The fact is, one can adjust the touchscreen to a few pre-set options.
Some of those options will suffice, but definitely not "to my liking."

You may be misreading "koreader" (a user-created application that runs on Kobo an Kindle readers and allows customizable touch zones) as "a Kobo reader" (which, as a stock unit, allows choosing between a few presets).

You have 4 values, all must be less or equal to 1. They represent width and height of screen, as well as width and height of zone. Also, you don't need to use fractions (like 1/2), you can enter plain numbers, like 0.5, 0.1 and such.

I admit it can take some time to get logic of things (I needed few minutes to comprehend it), but when you get logic, you can program touch zones to your liking in whatever way you want it.

You may need to sketch it on piece of paper before you make your changes. And remember to use defaults.persistent.lua so you don't loose settings with updates.

As Rev. Bob mentioned, probably you think that koreader is nickel. Nickel has predefined options and you can choose only them, like them or not.

Koreader comes with predefined option (singular), but you can edit it to your liking, whatever it may be. It includes "turning off" some zones, if you don't want to use them. You just make all values zeros.

Sorry, you are correct in saying that I don't know exactly what "Koreader" is.

I'm really not confident enough to mess with software. I prefer not to "hack" stuff. I'll use what the manufacturers/companies have produced for retail sale (and approved software updates).

The night mode (inverted) hack I did install (even though I barely use it). Thats about as complicated I am comfy to get.

Sadly, you are unlikely to know the joy of biweekly factory resets...
