Bob, I wasn't requesting the modification, it was only a comment . It would be only a change over others I've already done

As far as I'm concerned the Modify PI handles covers perfectly - by removing them entirely, along with non DC metadata.

Wish it had an option to delete selected DC elements such as dc:description.

Also wouldn't mind if it had an option to put the jacket at the back.

Yours wasn't the reaction I was worried about.

I am glad I've poked deeper into the editor's capabilities, though. Would like it if "merge stylesheets" would/could automatically move all @-rules to the top of the merged file, or would allow you to specify file sequence within the merged document (e.g. "append A to B and save under the name A" - the current interface forces you to call the file B) - but, that said, it's a fairly minor pain that's easily remedied. The ability to multiply all font sizes by a given constant (as when a publisher decides that the main text of the book should be 0.83em instead of 1em, and scales everything else accordingly) more than makes up for that small hassle, even if I'd prefer it if said multiplication allowed me to say "truncate and round off after N decimal places." Again, relatively painless to fix afterward.

I agree that merging CSS would be better if all the @ was at the top and the main CSS was the one used.

How do we multiply all the font sizes? I cannot find the option to do this.

It sounds like it might be time to dip your toe in the waters of calibre's Edit Book Tool plugins. If you can cope with Modify Epub then Editor plugins should be a breeze

FWIW I'd always foolishly assumed it was going to be hard, but I actually found it easier than creating User Interface plugins

Kovid has a demo one here. Funnily enough, the demo tool is a 'magnify font-size' tool - it must be fate!

Everything else I learned I got from looking at DiapDealer's Editing Toolbag code (although he's probably totally unaware of this - so if you're reading this, DiapDealer, many thanks ).

As far as the cover goes what you want to do can be done with a saved Regex-Function.

Kovid added a stylesheet sort function last year. I don't remember if it pushed the @-rules to the top or no.

For a kepub, there is supposed to be a one-one relationship between the ToC entries and the files. Removing cover from the ToC is not a good idea. It will work, but, it cause some weird things.

From memory, it's most noticeable as navigation problems. Using the next/previous chapter buttons don't always go to the obvious place. The page numbering is also affected. This is more for book numbering than chapter number.

Actually, thinking about it, they might have fixed this by adding something to the ToC in the database. I know I occasionally see something like "Untitled chapter". I'll have to check as it might be something that Kobo adds while doing their conversion.

It's in the editor's CSS filtering command, which I tried out yesterday. After looking at a random chapter in the book to find a standard body-text class, I went into the stylesheet to see what the associated font size was - in this case, 0.83em. Then I opened the filter dialog, which lets you specify a CSS property, value ranges, and what to do with whatever matches the spec. I selected font-size, any value, Multiply by, and whatever the reciprocal of 0.83 is. (In retrospect, I should've just said Divide by 0.83. Same effect.) Push the button, and off it goes!

It won't correct for situations where, for instance, vertical margins are set to interact with the text size to produce a specific result (such as using a 1.33em margin with 0.75em text to get a 1em gap) - but hey, it saved me from a lot of manual calculations. Granted, I still went through the stylesheet and performed some smart truncation - such as changing 1.000001em to remove the fraction - but that's just me being fiddly.

I may give in and do a development install later today, once I see if there's a 2.83 release, but I really hate dealing with Git and code checkouts just to customize one little thing.
