Transfering Books Back To Computer

I have an old 505 which has an SD card with masses of books on it, some of which I'd like to read without having to find them all and buying them again.

Is it possible for me to move the files back on to the computer so that I can convert them to mobi files and put them on my paperwhite? Theoretically, I think I should somehow be able to put the SD card into a slot in the computer, but I've never actually done this and would rather transfer them via connecting the reader to the pc.

The main reason I don't want to read directly on the 505 is lack of lighting and poor house lighting. The paperwhite really compensates for this.

I still have some very old Sony software which I used to use to put books on the reader; can I reverse the process?

If it's possible, please tell me how to do it.
Thank you very much for helping.

What you can do depends on on very important thing. DRM. If these eBooks have DRM, then you are stuck reading them on your 505. If not, you can use Calibre to convert to KF8.

Of course, if you still have the credentials used to register for the DRM on your 505, you could strip the DRM.

Even if the ebooks have DRM, you should be able to transfer them back to the Sony software or to Adobe Digital Editions as long as you regsiter the ADE with the same ID you used for Sony.

The vast majority of the books are either public domain or creative commons, so there will be few problems with DRM. I never did have ADE on my computer unless it's built into the Sony software. I have a really old version of the Sony Reader software: 2.5.00.09170

So if I can transfer the book onto this software does that put it on the hard drive?

Most of the books are stored on an external hard drive which is locked in a desk drawer. The key to the desk was lost during my house move a couple of years ago. 'One day' I'll get a locksmith to break into it for me!
I kept moving files onto the external hard drive when I had my old XP computer which had only 40gb hard drive.

Please tell me how to move the book files back to the computer as though you were telling a complete dummy! Though I spend lots of time using the pc, some things still baffle me.
Thanks lots.

I've done it! Thanks. Found the books by looking at the details in the software and following the path. Now I just have to convert them ...

I now have this problem again! There are some books on the 505 which I'd like to read, but I just can't remember how I did it last time. I think there were more posts in this thread telling me how to do this.
If anyone knows I would be eternally gratefull for your help.

Do these books on the 505 have DRM? If so, do they work with your current install of ADE? If so, you'll be able to remove the DRM and convert to KF8.

you should be able to do that without needing any sony software:
1. connect the reader to PC with USB.
the reader should then appear in " my computer" as a new drive letter. Look for one that was not there before you connected.
2. open that drive letter and browse within it until you find the books, then drag and drop the ones you want onto the PC desktop.
3. if the sony appears as multiple drives, do that for each drive until you find which one that has the books.

post screenshots if you get stuck
once you have books on desktop, proceed to file them, add then to calibre... whatever

PS there are other methods if that does not work, e.g. using calibre to handle the connect and search

You are not clear enough in defining your EXACT problem?
You cannot read the books because:
- you cannot find them in the device
- you cannot find a particular book in the device you remember you had it
- you cannot transfer them to computer
- you cannot open them on your computer
- you cannot read them because the access is denied.

The problem is transferring them to the computer. I'll try stumped's method, which sounds like it will work. I'll then use Calibre to convert. I don't think the books are DRM'd, but if they are, I'm a friend of Alf, or at least I used to be, I haven't needed him for a while.

Do you have the key for those eBooks in case they are infected?

Infected? Why should they be infected? What key?
These are books which way back in the midst of time, when Sony used to have give-aways of some ebooks for the 505, I downloaded from the Sony site. I haven't been there for ages, I don't think Sony any longer support ebooks, certainly not in lrf.
I'm managing to transfer some of them to the Paperwhite, but this is now complaining about memory, so will have to read lots before moving more.

Infected in this context is referring to DRM protected and the key would be the DRM key to "decode" it.

I've known for some time how to disinfect DRM'd books.
