Yes, my sister used me. However, she couldn't have known it would be delivered this early. And she could have waited for it, however she would have to leave for work at 8am, so that wouldn't be much help. One of my New Year's resolutions was to cut back the using. My father discovered last week that the price tag fairies seemed to have died; I used to go downstairs to the store extra early when we had a lot of shipments coming in. I've decided to stop doing that because I was neither paid for that time nor thanked for it. |

So, over the weekend I was busy with the money scanner, finding the drivers and updating it so it'll recognise the new €20 bill. However, I saw that other scanner already had the update for the new €50 bill that is going to be put into circulation next month. So I emailed again to ask when the update for our scanner. I got an answer this morning: it won't be updated, it's an older model and can't check for newer security measures. So they recommend that we get a newer model (he doesn't point us to their top of the line model, but the more modestly priced model). Just to be sure I asked if this model can be updated for the new €100 and €200 bill that will be released in the coming years. It can.
Sigh, now to break the news to my father. |

For sake of argument, if it saved you €300 a year, but cost €1000 every three years to replace, it wouldn't be worth having it. |

The cheapest I found the new for is €92, so it isn't that bad. Our current machine is 5 or 6 years old. However, my father loathes to replace things that have become obsolete, yet are still in good working order. However, he seemed to take the news well. |

On the topic of grown baby siblings, my mother called yesterday to make sure her husband had called my brother. He had.
I didn't tell her what was said between the two of them. Her husband and my brother now owe each other an apology. I told my brother I was not going to be in the middle of two so-called adults. I did tell them both NOT to tell mom what was said. She doesn't need to hear that crap. |

It's one of the downsides of the whole "family-run business" thing. Yes, they can be great, on the one hand, but, as you say, grinding and not very appreciative on the other. As Cins said, I'm proud of you, Rumple! Hitch |

Today I set up a power line network with integrated WIFI to keep my phone, tablet and laptop connected better, as the router was barely reachable from the kitchen, where I often sit. I know WIFI is not the fastest, and power line isn't either but if I need to download some serious shit (tm), even if I need it at the laptop, I'll use the desktop computer and download to a USB3 stick. For 95% of day to day use, power line/wifi is fast enough.
Setup should be easy: - (T)ransmitter: hold button 10 seconds to reset - (R)eceiver: hold button 10 seconds to reset - Wait 20 seconds for a reboot - R hold button for 2 seconds to start connecting - T hold button for 2 seconds to finish connection - Within 2 minutes, the power line plugs should be connected. I couldn't get this to work. Reason? "User error." If the manufacturer says 10 seconds and 2 seconds to hold the button, they mean just that. You will *have* to release the button exactly before the 11th and 3rd seconds start, or nothing will happen. I had to grab my phone and start a stopwatch to get this stuff going. That was irritating, and even then I had to try 3 or 4 times. It did work in the end, hoewever. Using the webadress to access the power line setup is bonkers though; it only works if you connect by Wifi to the power line itself, and then, if you change any settings, you lose connection (obviously). It's much easier to connect to the router, log into it, find the IP-address the power line access point received, and use that (through the router), so you don't lose connection when changing the settings. I've set the power line to use the same SSID and password as the router, and now I have full wifi coverage at a speed of 4.5 MB/s (35 MBit). I don't know if the lowish speed is caused by the Wifi connection (it's quite busy around here) or the (old) wiring in this house (which has quite some electrical stuff going). I'd have to connect the laptop to the power plug directly to test this. It has two wired ports, but they're at a max speed of 100 MBit/s (12.5 MB/s) if the wiring and power connection is perfect. Even though the internet connection itself is 150 MBit and the wifi/power plug setup is running at just 23% of that speed, I'm satisfied with the result, as Wifi (and thus the power line) is mainly used by the phone, tablet, and laptop for day to day use. 4.5 MB/s is quite enough for normal internet, some Windows updates, mail, and Whatsapp. As said, I do the heavy duty online stuff, or "real work (c)(r)" at the wired desktop. I still think they could have made that power line setup react in a 3 second time span instead of requiring and almost robot-like accuracy in pressing those buttons. That sounds like the definition of insanity. Without a stopwatch or countdown timer, you'd never get it set.
I'm back on the I had scheduling wagon again. My policy has always been that, once a schedule is posted, if you need a day off or forgot to ask for something off (and it's not an emergency) that you find your own replacement or be prepared to work. So, I've got one person that calls me on Friday to tell me she must have forgotten to give me her request for next Friday off. All the time implying that I missed that. Umm, no, I checked and got no such request. Did I want to call people and see if someone will work for her? Nope, not my job, make your own calls. So, she does manage to find a replacement but can she now work Thursday instead to make up for the hours on Friday? Nope, I don't have the hours available and really don't need you then. Take some of your vacation time since YOU neglected to ask for the day off. Oh, and then there's the other person that simply has to leave early some day to get to the courthouse to renew her license tabs before the end of the month. You can do that by mail or pay for them online anytime and they mail them to you. Or, how about any of the days you dodn't work until noon (which is at least once a week). Plenty of time since you got that notice to go and do it. And here I thought things would get better after we fired the one that couldn't manage to show up on time and always had an excuse as to why. I've never met anyone who gets stuck in the show or gets more flat tires than her. |

Gonna vent about a vent. Why put a vent about your job out there on Facebook under your actual name when you know several of your coworkers are your friends on Facebook and can see what you post?
Apparently one of my coworkers did that last Friday and talked all about how she's unappreciated at her job and how horribly she's treated and how we're not letting her advance as fast as she wants to. But when the boss sits down with her, none of that is brought up at all. Never acts as if she's unhappy or has a problem with anything. I told them at least my interent rants are anonymous and are only about scheduling. I'm not even on Facebook but, if I were, I'd definitely be smart enough not to put work vents out there for the world to see. |

Oh, boss did see it. Another coworker brought it up this morning and showed us all (me, our boss, and another coworker), the post that she'd taken a screenshot of on her phone.

Yesterday I tried to log into my website's wordpress dashboard and got only a blank page, the same happened for my website. Not a problem, it does happen once or twice a year and when I check later it works fine. I forgot about it and when I wanted to log in this morning I still got a blank page. I can log on fine to the admin part of my website (not wordpress), but I don't know enough to figure out what is wrong.
So I emailed my website host. Hopefully they can help me, I'm already having visions of having to start anew with my blog. Although it might be a good thing to start again, be more motivated to post. |
