Just trying to enable. Personally I like the original basic kindle. So I wouldn't go for it, but I wouldn't be like some posters and try to talk her out of it because of my biases. (Not referring to you.) |

Why shoot down other members' input, that was asked for, on the basis of what you say are biased opinions? Why is "enabling" more constructive? |

In fact, I was trying to be helpful by mentioning a deal she might not have known about/considered. Potentially useful information. Why is that a problem? Cost is always a factor, whyever else would she ask about upgrading? I know I'd like to be aware of all options before I made a purchase. |

But the Oasis is very different from the Voyage in design. So I didn't think of the Voyage as a choice. To me, the Voyage isn't much different from the PW, but the Oasis is very different. Anyway if I was the OP, I would get the one I wanted after going over all the differences. |

The main attractions of the Oasis are the form factor and the page turn buttons. To enjoy the former, you need to read with it outside the cover. I guess I'd ask how likely you are to fall asleep while reading and let the reader fall to the floor. If at all likely, maybe a Paperwhite would be the better choice.

I have a Voyage. I considered getting the Oasis but fortunately they ran out before I ordered one so I had to wait and while I waited I thought about that battery. The internal battery in the Oasis is 1/6 the size of the battery in the Voyage. The cover provides additional capacity but it only keeps the internal battery charged. The Oasis isn't powered by it.
Since a typical battery is good for between 500 and 1000 charges that internal battery should use up it's lifetime of charges 6 times faster. And that's why I don't have an Oasis. Actually I think the form factor is pretty nice and if it wasn't for that small battery I would have one. Barry |

You keep saying this, but meanwhile actual users have noted no loss in out-of-cover lifetime -- and by now, nearly a year after introduction, by your argument, they should have seen a major one.

First time I did it kind on purpose, shortly after I got it. Someone asked then how long the battery on the Oasis will go without putting it into the cover and I was around 7 hours. 6-7 I think. The other day I forgot to put it in the cover in between my reading sessions and from morning on to late afternoon, I had about the same reading time. 6-7 hours. I know this because I know how long it takes me to read a book and I read 1.5 books in that time. Both around 360 pages. Light on 10 and wifi on and off. Font size on 4. So if there is any degrading of the battery at this point, its so small its not noticeable to me yet. As to justifying the Oasis? Its a personal thing. I also have the Voyage and I don't consider its "buttons" to be real buttons. It was a bit hard for me to hold, although the screen is nice. So is my Oasis screen, but the ergonomics for me are the best since the very first kindle. The wedge shape makes it so comfortable I can read for hours without pain. For me it was worth that. I will be passing down my Voyage at some point maybe to my husband who is still plowing along with my first PW. That one has a horrible screen, but he says its fine for him. But then he doesn't really read a lot. |

I agree with both issybird and barryem. I've been saying something similar to what barryem said about the Oasis battery.
I do think if you want a Kindle, go for the PW3 or the Voyage, but stay far away from the Oasis. I think the design of the Oasis is not all that good and the price is just silly. |

I haven't actually seen an Oasis and I do agree that the price is a bit ridiculous. But so is the price of my Voyage and I'm glad I got it.
From the reviews I've seen and read I really think I'd like the Oasis. I have no doubt I'd have gotten one if it wasn't for my concern about the battery. I've paid ridiculous prices for nearly all my ereaders. ![]() I've been an avid reader for about 65 years now. Maybe a bit longer. As long as I can remember when I decided I wanted to read a book I never let the price get in my way. My tastes are broad enough that I read a lot of inexpensive books but when I particularly want a book I get it, price notwithstanding. I see no reason not to apply the same principle to my ereader. I do have a Voyage. ![]() When I was a kid in school we had a Texas history book that was a big thick black and white comic book. It was a great way to learn history. Full of detail and a pleasure to read. When I was an adult we were talking about history books and I mentioned that book, which was the first time I'd thought about it in years. I immediately went looking for one. At that point they'd been out of print for years and old copies were selling from about $300 and up. I was in college then and unable to afford it but I started saving. Fortunately, a few months later, when I had about half the price saved up, some group started reprinting it and I got a copy for about $20. If they hadn't done that I was going to pay the $300 for it and I would have been perfectly happy to do so. I wouldn't pay a ridiculous price for a car or a suit but books are different. Barry |

Hilarious how so many threads turn into a Oasis-fest.
Still digging mine. The battery isn't an issue. Sometimes I read it in the cover, sometimes not. When not, I shove it back in the cover when done. Every now and then I plug it in for charging. People seem to love to get all bent out of shape over battery life, but if this thing show any serious degradation of battery life before I've had enough of it...I'll be surprised. -HM |
