And they might take the next step and not allow Lithium batteries on a plane even inside devices. So it's not a good idea to play up the danger (low as it is) of the batteries. At least not until the newer nanotech batteries are market ready.

There are a lot of wrist watches powered by lithium batteries. And the only way to tell is to open them up and look at the battery. How long before they start making us open the back of our watches to the check if we have a lithium battery as the power source. Maybe the TSA should employ watch makers.

If the feds banned all electronic devices from both checked and carried baggage, the airlines would be able to sell onboard access (at a premium) to the cloud where passengers would be able to access their data (music, videos, documents, etc) using airline provided terminals.

The airlines would then contribute large campaign donations to Congress in order to keep this cash cow. In return, the feds would monitor the data accessed by passengers. A win-win for both business and government; and all in the name of security.

The majority of pacemakers contain lithium batteries. I can't wait to see what they do with this one. Although it should only affect older senior terrorists.

Is that only in the US? I've certainly sent packages containing lithium batteries (e.g. secondhand readers with lithium batteries) by airmail within Europe. The post office sticks a large "contains a lithium battery" sticker on the package, but there's no restriction on sending it.

EDIT: just checked, and the "rules" with Royal Mail are that you can send lithium batteries that are either contained in, or posted with, electronic equipment, but you can't send lithium batteries by themselves. How very odd!

The presumption appears to be that the electronic gear can prevent short circuits and dissipate any excess heat, keeping it from igniting the packaging.

I understand that when it comes to batteries that are in equipment, but you're also allowed to send batteries that are separate to electronic equipment, but posted in the same package. That seems a little odd.

That is odd indeed.
The real concern isn't so much the battery itself overheating but rather igniting the packaging. And the risk of that is the same for loose batteries regardless of what else is in the package.
Sounds like a snap judgment by a bureaucrat somewhere who didn't think things through. The odds of any single battery going are low but sooner or later...

We really need to start moving to supercapacitors or Lithium-free designs.
