What I don't get is why Amazon feels the need to force DRM on publishers who want to publish eBooks without DRM? The publishers should be able to sell without DRM since it is their product. This is 100% a step back for eBooks. In fact, it's more like miles and miles back.

Yeah, some have argued that publisher demands are the only thing keeping Amazon from going DRM free on the Kindle (as they are with their MP3 store). I haven't been convinced of this, and reading the Teleread article certainly doesn't advance that argument.

I agree, I have a number of Sony products including my e-reader and my Sony Vaio lap top. All are equally excellent products! I do wish we could get e-books for the same price as Amazon, but that's the way the cookie crumbles!

With DRM I can't buy ebooks from Amazon and read them on my Sony -- I need to own a Kindle and read them on a Kindle. It is a question of controlling the vertical market, or to use the M word, trying to monopolize the ebook industry. This is why I find supporting Amazon problematic.

At this point, yes, a Kindle is needed to purchase Kindle books.

But if one is willing to remove DRM, they can be read* on other devices that handle Mobipocket (or a format that Mobi can be converted to).

* This excludes the Topaz format books that make up a small percentage of the Kindle books available.

If you don't like DRM on files, then you don't need to buy Windows, and any closed software neither!
Most of it has some sort of protection on it similar to DRM. (like activation, serial keys, or ..).
