Free on Amazon UK today - The Northern Blockade by M C Smith

Spoiler:
May, 1916.

The First World War is raging and Lieutenant Charles Dollimore is serving on HMS Warspite with the Home Fleet.

He wants to make his new son, Philip, proud when he is old enough to ask, ‘What did you do during the war?’

Then the Warspite’s squadron runs into the German High Sea Fleet off Jutland.

Witnessing the violence and the death haunts Dollimore.

Many years later, war looms once again.

Suffering from memories of Jutland, Dollimore makes an error in judgment that results in the loss of fellow sailors. He is discreetly sent to serve out of the way on the China Station.

As the Second World War about to break out, Dollimore is looking for vindication and serving in China is not going to do it.

Some at the Admiralty are not convinced he can serve, but he is given the benefit of the doubt and command of HMS Burscombe, one of the most powerful cruisers in the Home Fleet. After all, he was at Jutland.

For over two hundred years the Clark family has been producing successful officers for the Royal Navy.

Rear-Admiral Harper Clark is well respected at work but his family life is another matter. His youngest son David has no interest in serving but Harper will not stand for that, not with war coming.

David is also in love with Maggie, a girl from the village. Thinking that love is greater than the barriers of class, they make their feelings known, opening up a past history of hate between the families.

When David’s sister, Patricia, is dealt a serious blow by the fortunes of war, she adds fuel to the fire by claiming David is not a Clark at all, but the product of their mother’s affairs.

It is time for him to face his father and get answers, but what is the Old Man’s true agenda?

Meanwhile, the war machine gears up.

Home Fleet exercises are being run and an economic blockade of Germany is planned as the winds of war whirl. Seeking out the enemy on the turbulent seas, some men will prove themselves; some will barely hang on to past glories – and when the real battles begin, Jerry does a lot more damage than anticipated.

Free on Amazon UK today - Murder at the Lodge (Inspector Peach Series Book 7) by J M Gregson

Spoiler:
‘They’re respectable people, known to me personally...’

As the Masonic Lodge Ladies’ night draws to a close and the guests drift away, a man is found in the car park, garrotted at his steering wheel.

Moments later, the police are called out to attend the scene of a burglary. But nothing in the house seems to be stolen…

DI Percy Peach has always taken a special pleasure in taunting his superior, Superintendent Tucker, about the indiscretions of his fellow Masons.

And now with a dead body found at a Masonic function, the inspector has been given a free hand to dig up any amount of dirt about the secret order.

Blackmail and bribes run rife throughout.

Debts lead to threats and violence.

Infidelity leads to maddening jealousy.

And some feuds last a lifetime.

As the murder enquiry unfolds, Percy Peach and his colleagues find themselves unearthing the seedier side of East Lancashire’s elite.

With alibis contradicting one another and emotions running high, the Masonic lodge grows into a collection of suspects who each held a motive to pursue revenge…

Free on Amazon UK today - A Sunset Touch (Inspector Gil Mayo Mystery Series Book 12) by Marjorie Eccles

Spoiler:
The truth can't stay hidden forever…

Detective Superintendent Gil Mayo soon finds himself drawn into a devastating case as an arson attack results in a house being burnt down.

Much to the distress of the neighbours, it becomes a big concern that two children might have died, trapped inside the blaze.

Yet when the fire brigade manages to get inside to inspect the burnt-out remains of the house, the intrigue only increases with
what they find.

The body of one man…

With no sign of the children and the body not providing any answers, Detective Gil Mayo sets to work on a murder inquiry with his characteristic compulsive attention to detail.

Never an easy life, another case also falls into Mayo’s lap but despite his best efforts, both cases seem to be tough to solve.

With family connections, past lives and secret deals going on throughout, Mayo and his team struggle to grasp the true nature of both crimes.

Only when both crimes seem to lead to the same path, from Poland to wartime England and so to the present day, is Mayo able to unravel the truth once and for all…

Free on Amazon UK today - The Colour of Death by Frances Lloyd

Spoiler:
Detective Inspector Jack Dawes is investigating the murder of a prostitute…

He is no stranger to brutal crimes, being part of the London Police Force, but this one is extreme.

A frenzied attack, blood covered scene and a very unlikely suspect arrested.

Before he can break the case, Dawes is shipped to Scotland by his superior to support a Constabulary ridden with flu.

A body has been found at the bottom of a castle tower. Circumstances are suspicious.

Doomdochry Castle resides on a remote Shetland Isle and has a history of heartbreak and horror.

Unfortunately for Dawes, history is about to repeat itself.

The residents are unhelpful and secretive. Is this due to his intrusion into their community? Or are they hiding something?

Unable to prove foul play, Dawes is set to return home with the conclusion that the death was accidental. Until more residents are discovered dead.

All the evidence leads in different directions. Indicating that there is a large group behind the murders.

How can he uncover this with all local police bedridden with the flu? Who can he call in for support in closing these cases?

And just how do all these deaths link together?

It’s not until the explosive conclusion, threatening the lives of his loved ones, that he realises that this Isle is not as remote as first thought…

Wicked Autumn is the first in the Max Tudor series by G. M. Malliet. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Wicked-Autumn...dp/B004TLHOVO/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/wicked-autumn

Spoiler:
Quote:
Max Tudor has adapted well to his post as vicar of St. Edwold's in the idyllic village of Nether Monkslip. The quiet village seems the perfect home for Max, who has fled a harrowing past as an MI5 agent. Now he has found a measure of peace among urban escapees and yoga practitioners, artists and crafters and New Agers. But this new-found serenity is quickly shattered when the highly vocal and unpopular president of the Women's Institute turns up dead at the Harvest Fayre. The death looks like an accident, but Max's training as a former agent kicks in, and before long he suspects foul play.

Max has ministered to the community long enough to be familiar with the tangled alliances and animosities among the residents, but this tragedy surprises and confounds him. It is impossible to believe anyone in his lovely village capable of the crime, and yet given the victim, he must acknowledge that almost everyone had probably fantasized about killing Wanda Batton-Smythe.

As the investigation unfolds, Max becomes more intricately involved. Memories he'd rather not revisit are stirred, evoking the demons from the past which led him to Nether Monkslip. In WICKED AUTUMN, G.M. Malliet serves up an irresistible English village—deliciously skewered—a flawed but likeable protagonist, and a brilliantly modern version of the traditional drawing room mystery.

But surely, the end result of that would be that you (nobody) would never actually buy (permanently) ANY book. You'd pay for it, read it then simply get a refund. Kindle store then effectively becomes just a lending library..........not what they intended I presume.

And anyway, do the rules allow you to repurchase an identical item to one you've had a refund on? I'd have thought there was some software to prevent it.

I've done it with a similar but not exactly identical work (albeit more expensive). I purchased one version of The Worm Ouroboros when I meant to purchase another version. I got the first refunded and purchased the other.

But that's my point (I think..... ). Your two were similar but NOT identical. At the risk of boring others, I had one 'situation' last year. On one author's weekly newsletter ther was a 'clickon' to get one of her books free from Amazon - only I didn't check and got charged £1.99! Went back to author who suggested an Amazon refund (their fault BTW not hers) but she then sent me a direct copy of the book via an email: she too reckoned that if you had a refund on an individual item then that was it for that item.....

or maybe we're both wrong.

Yes, you can. I've done it a couple of times. Click, click, click thru a list of items supposed to be free, but one wasn't. Usually, there is a loud sigh and bad word uttered just as I click on it. But put it on my Calibre (as an empty book) as "returned to amazon", and immediately put on eReaderIQ for $0.00. In most cases, it comes up free, but there might be a long wait (1 year + in some cases). So, yes, you can repurchase. But, just for kicks, I looked after repurchasing, and Amazon doesn't allow you to return for credit again

It's my understanding that if you have a habit of returning books amazon will eventually do something about it.

If we are talking about Amazon, I recommend that you have customer service call you on the phone, and tell the rep exactly what's on your mind.

I'm very confident that the rep will give you a refund without damaging your reputation at Amazon.
