Today I finished The Winter Over by Matthew Iden.
A surprisingly entertaining thriller set on the South Pole during the winter (almost nine months of total darkness), when only a skeleton crew inhabits the research station. Even before the summer crew leaves strange and horrible things start happening. The mystery part was a bit predictable (for me), but nonetheless a quick and fun read.

Got through three chapters of Justice and Her Brothers (about 27%) and it did not hold me, so I've put this down and moved on to Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, and only fifteen pages in (counting cover and front matter) I'm already glad I chose this book next.

I'm reading several books again simultaneously. With a bit of willpower perhaps I can avoid starting something else until all these are read.

I suggest finding the audiobook of Queen Lucia released by Blackstone Audio. You can get it from Overdrive or Hoopla or buy it. The person reading it is doing a very good job and she brings the flavor or the time this takes place in very well. Plus she does voices and they work.

There's also a Librivox freebie. I downloaded it, but haven't yet had a chance to check it out.

The Wanda McCaddon/Nadia May version is superb. It's the one I've been reading (as has Jon), and she really does make it come alive. I can enjoy reading the actual book, I don't have a problem putting myself into the right time and place, but I have to focus more than I've had time to deal with of late. So being able to just listen to Ms. McCaddon has been quite fun.

I'm doing so little travelling these days, which is when I listen to audiobooks, that it would take forever for me to listen to it (and anyway I'm in the middle of "Behind Her Eyes" by Sarah Pinborough, and I hate breaking off in the middle of an audiobook and then coming back later - lose too much of the story thread). So ebook it will have to be .

This sounded like something that would be right up my street. But I hated it, and abandoned it at 28% of the way through.

It was told from the point of view of the hero - Lara McClintoch. So are lots of similar stories, so that's not a problem. But the constant references to things that she only found out later about events that she's currently involved in are really irritating. And her recounted actions are beyond belief. Definitely not for me.

March 14th: The Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson. The sixth book set in his Mistborn universe, and third in the 'modern' subseries.

I agree. The audiobook just gives this book a life I don't think it would have by just reading. Also, being able to hear some of the words pronounced correctly is much better than trying to figure how to pronounce them. There are some words I might not have read correctly. Wanda/Nadia (same person) brings out the characters with the way she does the voices.

I'm a little irritated by how she says "Rize-home." I've only ever heard it pronounced "Riz'm."

I'm reading Massacre on the Merrimack by Jay Atkinson, a recounting of the Hannah Duston story. She was taken captive in a late 17th century Indian raid. This fits one of my challenges for this year and also is of high local interest.

It's a shame, really. This is a crackling account of the issues and conflicts between the natives and settlers on the New England frontier, but it's marred by a few flaws. The author goes a little too far in the fictional gloss he gives to the action, which the story doesn't require (don't tell me that someone spat on the ground!) and he clearly doesn't know the difference between a rifle and a musket, which terms he uses interchangeably. That error got my hackles up in the first few pages, as it's the kind of thing which makes me wonder about the level of understanding the author brings to his material. No one in 17th century America had a rifle!

The raid took place 320 years ago tomorrow; it'll be a good tale to while away a snowbound day.

This is reminding me of Duncan's Great Game trilogy. Wasn't a fan of that and I'm hoping he doesn't go down the exact same path with this series.

Thanks to Marvel's half-off sale over the weekend, I finally got to read Civil War II - the main story and some of the tie-in volumes. It would've been a better story if the central author hadn't completely forgotten about a character development that renders a pivotal event utterly impossible. To use an unrelated example, it's as if someone had published a Bruce Wayne Batman story during the time when Dick Grayson was wearing the suit: no matter how good the story is, the inattention to continuity is a fatal flaw.

Spent the day finishing Crimson Shore by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.

The book contains two plot lines and then a third one appears at the end. It seems like the two authors couldn't decide what to write. I do like Constance as a character but felt she wasn't her usual self. The first mystery/murder plot was only ok. The second was kind of silly. The third has more potential which I hope is done well in the next installment which I already own having known of its cliffhanger. Not the best in the series. Rated C [3 stars].
