I guess one has to have a taste for that sort of humor. I think the Lucia books are delightful and they all have literal LOL moments. I'm not going to discuss it here in advance of the book club discussion, but I would hate for people to be put off trying it when it's free, people. I know there are many Lucia fans here; maybe some will swing by the discussion.

That's where I am now. I like it, California when it was still part of Mexico. A lot of scope for the imagination, as Anne Shirley would have it. It's the shipboard parts where I have to let some of it wash over me. After O'Brian, I'm familiar with the terms, but I don't necessarily know exactly what they all mean.

Hornblower is on my list; I'd be likelier to get to him sooner if my libraries had him. Or I could head for the border, since Forester hit PD in Canada this year.

You say the fantasy part as if it were a surprise. The main character being a wizard's apprentice would seem to make the genre pretty obvious to me, just from the most basic description...

I've just read the first two chapters so far, but it strikes me a something that would make for a fine British sitcom; something along the lines of Keeping Up Appearances.

Recently finished The Stars are Legion by Kameron Hurley. A very unusual space opera with a strong social message and filled with badass females [and only females].

Not the same thing, but there have been two British mini-series based on some of the later books. I've seen the one from the 80s, but I don't think the one from a few years ago was ever released here.

And now I have a new mission in life: track down those two series and see if are available for streaming.

That was not unexpected. I'm not much of a fantasy fan, and would rarely read this genre. I read this on the reco of a friend, but could not properly digest it, hence the rant.

Sounds like something right up my alley. Placing a hold at my library for it.

I am one third of the way through Hemingway Didn't Say That: The Truth Behind Familiar Quotations by Garson O'Toole. He is the guy who runs the Quote Investigator website, and these are quotes he's investigated on said site. Nice thing is that he provides all the references with each entry.

I really enjoyed it. Not for the squeamish though, but loved how layered the whole thing is. Lots to unpack, but that would be rather spoilerish.

MUCH more enjoyable than the first book. Now I'm actually looking forward to the 3rd book, Saints.
