So anyway I copied the .kobo file and put that aside, then downgraded to 3.7 firmware and reinstalled night mode, then backed up and deleted the 3.7 .kobo file in its entirety and added back the 4.3.8842 .kobo file. Result: I now can use the old nightmode, the firmware shows as 3.7, but I have some of the advantages of the 4.3.8842 including some bugs fixed. Hope this is useful for someone. Not kosher of course but I am happier.
So, you are running the 3.7 firmware but with the internal database from 4.3842? That will work, but, it won't have fixed any bugs.

The only major problem I have found is that I now cannot use Calibre to 'send to device" but that is not a biggie - can still side load using - in my case - Windows Explorer.
Which probably means calibre displayed a message about the firmware version on the device. A message that included how to work around this problem. Of course, there is a newer calibre version that supports firmware 4.3.8871.

NOW THE PLEA What 4.3.8842 needs is a good nightmode patch - one that can be toggled on an off.
You mean, like the nightmode hack created specifically for 4.2.8283 and later firmware that is discussed in the nightmode hack thread?

Did you add those lines using Notepad? Or did you use a Linux line end aware editor such as Notepad++?

This firmware seems to have screwed my reading stats. I went from 500-hours of reading time to over 1000-hours in a just a couple of hours.

YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING!
Yes, I'm agree with you : a real night mode toggle is essential... we just have to wait, I think they are working around .

A little note : with the old nightmode plugin, a long press on the light button (800ms for example and only for devices with a physical button) switched between the 2 modes (nightmode and daymode), I hope it will be the same .

PS : sorry for my bad english again.

Two options. Change the affiliate to bol or side load the firmware. Here is the link to the thread that has the link to the Wiki to get the new firmware for your device.

But there are bugs and performance issues that will get fixed now if one does not wait.

Well, I guess you can never tell ...

I'd all-but retired my venerable N905B Touch, because it had started repeatedly freezing on me. I'd tried complete resets, and rolling back to firmware like 2.6.1, and even 1.8.1, but it still kept locking up. I had no idea what the cause was, nor how to fix it.

So, I thought, nothing to lose. I tried sideloading the Mark 3 edition of 4.3.8842, and -- I hope the Digital Gods aren't listening! -- so far, not a single lock-up. No hacks or patches, but to date it works fine. Huh! ;-)

(I've just doomed myself saying that, haven't I? ...)

Thanks so much for answering.

The one bug - or at least on my Aura HD - that seems partially fixed by replacing the config 3.17 file with the 4.3 config in the 3.17 fw - a bug that really annoyed me, is as follows. With the 3.17 config file in the 3.17 build whenever I created a Collection, and then starting with Manage Collection / Add Books tried to order my large book collection by Author, that order did not come up. The only order available was 'Recent'. By adding the later config file the books now reorder appropriately even although the menu name remains 'Recent' remains.

I used Notepad to put in the new nightmode code. Actually it did work - for a while. Even so the nightmode reversed back to 'daymode' after a few pages. There was also no way to toggle it.

I do have the latest version of Calibre - but it does not work to load books with my hybrid 3.17 fw / 4.3 config file setup. As is said earlier, I can live with that temporarily. That is 'temporarily' until a more sophisticated 'toggleable' nightmode patch comes out for the 4.3.

Thanks so much for this column, you are amazing people.

Again thanks for your answer.

Any bugs/glitches/etc. do not matter when using this firmware. This firmware was pulled very quickly. Please go to the thread for 4.3.8871 and then try that and see what you get.

You obviously didn't read what you quoted. Rosalene is using 3.17 with a file from this firmware. This is a follow up to an earlier post in this thread. It wouldn't make sense to post it in the new thread.

It's a hybrid setup and it might not work because for the 4.3 version firmwares the underlying graphics have changed. So it's not advisable to put on anything to do with the new firmware while keeping the underlying OS from an old firmware.

So don't do it and just go with the new firmware or fully stick with an old firmware. But don't mix the two.

Why are you quoting me with an answer for Rosalene? Again, if you read the post, you'd see it was a temporary workaround.

Because it has started a discussion, can I check what you did and are running?

You upgraded to a 4.3.x and decided you didn't like it. You took a copy of the .kobo directory. Then you did a factory reset and went to 3.17. The you replaced the 3.17 .kobo directory with the 4.3.x .kobo directory.

Hence you are running 3.17, but with a database as some other files that came from a 4.3.x build.

That will work, but only because Kobo have made sure the database is backwardly compatible. And it is completely safe. But, it DOES NOT fix any bugs. There is absolutely no Kobo code in the .kobo directory, only data.

The "bug" you say is fixed, is not a bug. It is a lack in the available sorts in different places in the interface. The fix from the 4.3.x config file is because you used recent sorting while using 4.3.x and it added a line to the config file as log as you don't change the sorting, nothing will change.

For the nightmode, there is already a version that will work with the way you want it to with the 4.3.x firmware. It was released in time for it to be needed.

As to calibre, if it isn't sending books to the device, then there is a problem. But, until you report the problem properly (any errors, what actually happens, what you think should happen), nothing can be done about it. Calibre 2.81 works with ALL released versions of the Kobo firmware on all available Kobo ereaders. There could be a bug, but it is more likely there is a problem with your configuration, or device.

Hello

This new update screwed up my device.
I just don't know how to explain it.

These lines appear randomly with no apparent pattern, mostly in the bottom of the screen and sometimes the refresh doesn't get them away.
What should I do, I never messed with my device before?
