You're well set up to do that having both the 505 and the Kindle. Sadly for me, most of the books, especially new additions, are ADE rather than Mobi. I think it's because ADE has the ability to allow readers to return the book early. With Mobi, you have it for three weeks even if you finish it in three days. I've considered looking for a cheap, used 505 just for library books but the selection of books I want isn't quite enough to mandate it, plus I know I would miss search and dictionary look up. Still, I'm tempted to go for it even with the reduced capabilities. I'd like to support my library's ebook venture and show that it's wanted.

Sorry, no. Blame still goes to the publishers.

I have found that if I am willing to wait a bit the price comes down -- of course there have been occasions that I just can't wait - that whole instant need for things -- but it still is cheaper than the book so I am happy

The prices are set by publishers. "Mega-corporations" like Amazon can afford to take the hit of selling best-sellers at a loss. Small eBook stores clearly cannot. The original poster is somewhat misguided, IMHO.

Okay. But that's only because I generally wait for prices to come down by themselves. Which they do. So, sure.

Why not just boycott all Amazon ebooks. They're all too restrictive.

I like all the inputs so far on this topic and have been surprised by the tenacity that many have shown. I think that the book publishers are operating under the wrong pricing system and it is our right and responsibility as early adapters to gain appropriate prices for future users. The community will grow overtime but will be seriously hindered by extraordinarily high prices. Yes they are high it doesn't cost the same to produce an ebook.

The publisher has a "right" to set whatever price they wish for their product.

You have the "right" as a consumer, to choose to buy or not to buy at that price.

You do not, with the greatest respect, have the right to "dictate" to the publisher what price they "should" sell their product at. At the end of the day, the market will determine what the appropriate price is.

Your argument appeared to be aimed at Amazon as opposed to the publishers. I do agree with you that many ebook prices are too high.

Specifically at Amazon books over $9.99 with the idea that somehow they violated a promise to us. I think the internet call for this boycott stems both from a lack of understanding about the particular promise and the actual stats about book prices at Amazon.

Library ebooks aren't necessarily as great as they sound. I can't read the ebooks that my library offers on my Sony because they have some sort of special software protections that only allow you to read the book for 2 weeks or whatever, like a regular library book. But Sony can't process it, so I can't read any of them on it.

Does anyone have experience with library books on the Kindle?

If you run the Kindlefix script you can put your library books on your kindle and read them there, AFTER you download them to your computer.

However, once the library loan period is over, they will automatically become unreadable.

Still, its better than schlepping back and forth, and there is no late fees!

AACCK! I agree! I just don't buy the books I feel are too expensive. They always go down in price once the 'newness' has worn off.

It may be months, but what book is that important?
