I think the K2 looks way better to be honest. The keyboard is kind of growing on me

I agree. I would prefer the same grey just one or two shades darker. I chose the skin I did because it was a warmer grey tone. I'd actually prefer it were solid color. The one thing I miss having the skin is the feel of the Kindle case. It's actually a much warmer and more comfortable feeling than the slick skin, but I do feel the screen looks better without so much white being reflected up around it.

I would like one covered in faux fur, I covered the dash of my first car with fur and I really liked that.

Why, exactly?

(Serious question -- this seems to be the majority opinion; I just don't understand why the new one is so much less "fugly.")

It's all rather subjective, isn't it? Just because my favorite color is red doesn't mean I think you're wrong if yours is blue.

Yes, absolutely subjective. And I certainly wasn't implying anyone's opinion was in any sense wrong.

I have found that the "fugly" opinion is far more widely held among those who have never spent much time with (or even actually seen) the original Kindle than those who have used one.

I also see a good bit of similarity in the design of K1 and K2 -- some things favoring the original, some the newer model. Is it just the thinner, non-wedge design that makes the new one not "fugly?" Rounded corners? More white plastic?

I don't find either version ugly (nor do I find them particularly beautiful). I guess I am blind to aesthetic (as opposed to functional) design issues that are very important to others. Wouldn't be the only respect in which I am odd.

The K2 is nice enough for me to jump in and order one...the looks of the K1 was what kept me from buying one.

Didn't like the old design, but the new one looks nice. I'm happy with my PRS-505, but the new Kindle is definitely a nice looking gadget.

Personally I like the increased symmetry and the thinness. The rounded corners I kind of like but they could be less rounded.

What I dislike is the color and the keyboard. The keys do look better in the high-res image than the originals I saw. They're a little more refined and less bubbly and prototype-ish. The page buttons are ok but I'd like to see them better integrated into the fit of the case.

What I want to know when folks start getting them is how the device feels. I found the case materials of the K1 very tactilely pleasing. The K2 looks a little more cold and slick. Maybe it's just the photos.

Yep, I'm interested in first-hand usability reports as well.

I don't think the metal back is likely to "feel" as good as the rubberized back of the original, which is very nice and helps to maintain a solid grip.

I think that both models are goofy-looking, but it wouldn't prevent me from buying one if it was within my budget.

And I was hoping that it would be smaller. I can fit the Sony Reader in my back pocket, but the Kindle just does not fit as nicely.

I am one of the folks who was very disappointed with the looks of the original Kindle. I had a Sony PRS-500, and when I compared that to my coworker's Kindle, I was pretty happy I had the Sony. The cover seemed to suck, and even holding it "naked" didn't seem as comfortable as my Sony with the cover. However, the Kindle store was and is definitely a coup for Amazon.

Now, while I haven't held the Kindle 2 yet, it seems to be a huge step forward in the looks department. The cases posted on the front page seem nice - even though you have to purchase them separately. For my needs, I think the main thing that would make the Kindle a much better device would be a slide-out or otherwise hideable keyboard. I just don't want to have to have a keyboard on the front of my book, even if it otherwise seems like a pretty good device.
