1) reset device

2) turn on airplane mode and downgrade kindle

3) load partial firmware file to kindle to keep from further updates

4) turn off airplane mode temporarily to log into Amazon account

5) turn on airplane mode and follow steps to jailbreak device

Or is that the wrong order?

Follow the directions exactly as given until you complete all of them.
Then register the device if required.

OR

Register the device before you start the procedure.

Your choice.

Registration / no registration does not cause any problems.
It is only S.O. or password protection that can prevent recovering the device if something goes wrong (and nothing has, in the past 7 months).

The device is from my friend, she also cannot tell me what she did. However, now the diag mode is totally different what is before.

Same choices, different graphics and the menu probably no longer works over the serial port.

Choose disable diags and reboot, same-same as other devices.

If she wasn't hacking the device, it needs to be in diags which means she should send it in for repair.
This isn't a free repair site.

So I am a bit confused with this step for preparing my kindle.

My issue is that after doing the reset I am still on the most updated system version (5.8.7.0.1). I'm not sure if I was supposed to go through the setup steps of selecting English, connected to wifi, logged into my account, and turned airplane mode on as soon as possible.


I have a PW3 (G090G1)
I have already:
* registered my device to my account
* removed ads
* made sure no passcode or parental controls are on
* backed up \documents

grayscale Kindles DO NOT run Android or any other embedded system that keeps a copy of the original firmware on it.
So they can not change firmware version with a factory reset.

All it does is erase the two user data areas, the one you can see over USB and the hidden one.

Just continue to continue by doing the rest of the steps in order.

You posted that you had already registered the device.
You posted that you had removed special offers.
There is no other reason to connect with anything on-line until you have completed all steps.

In fact, the next step will install a much earlier firmware version.
If you let the Kindle connect on-line after that, it will automatically update to the most recent version.
Which means you will have to start over at step #0.

"reset" on most firmwares does not take it back to the select language step.

If you have read the directions, you know you can't let it sit at that prompt because you need to access the USB storage area from your pc.

If your device is prompting for you to select a language, then select a language.

Next it will ask if it can scan for wifi connections, let it do the scan.

After that, the next prompt will be to allow it to connect.
Look closely at the screen, you will find a "complete later" choice. Usually in small print, in a lower corner of the screen.
Select "complete later".

Blocking this jailbreak may be what the .0.1 is about.
So keep notes in case something does not work as intended.

I do have a xx90G1 myself but it isn't running the current firmware.
