On windows systems only creation / modification date/times are present, Unix systems use creation / modification / access date/times.
Are you perhaps using a *NIX system or by mistake used "accessed" instead of "modified"?

No, I'm using Windows 10, and if I right-click a file and choose Properties, I get Created/Modified/Accessed, and the corresponding Date/Time.

That was the reason Kovid wanted you make a change INSIDE the book. Windows can get lazy when replacing and the only sure way is to look IN the book for the V2 change

@DrChiper - I didn't think you would fall into the cascading folders trap, but I thought it worth mentioning.

I'm using Windows 10 version 1706 (up to date as of 30 minutes ago), and Calibre 2.80. This computer had it's 10th birthday last November. My tests were of: Save to Disk->Save to disk in a single directory on a book that only has an epub, and my STD settings are thus:

Name:	stdsettings.jpg
Views:	102
Size:	100.3 KB
ID:	155432

In that environment I can't reproduce what you've described. Calibre always saves the current EPUB (or other formats). If the file already exists it is always overwritten and the mod and create timestamps are always the date and time of the STD operation - even if I don't change the EPUB.

The overwrite happens irrespective of the create and mod timestamps of the existing file. I tried backdating to the 19th and forward dating to the 22nd centuries. I tried make the existing file Read Only and I got this error.

Code:
calibre, version 2.80.0
ERROR: Error while saving: Failed to save any books to disk, click "Show details" for more information

Failed to save the EPUB format of: Bleak House by Charles Dickens to disk, with error:
    Traceback (most recent call last):
      File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\save.py", line 263, in write_book
      File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\save.py", line 284, in write_fmt
      File "site-packages\calibre\startup.py", line 116, in local_open
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: u'C:\\_Scratch\\SaveBook\\Bleak House - Charles Dickens.epub'
I guess one could make a case for an optional warning message if a file already exists.

BR

That's a rather outrageous claim bold assertion .

In what respect is Windows lazy? In doing the copy, in updating the file create and modify timestamps, something else?

Which version of Windows and which file system is your assertion based on? If it's an ancient version of Windows or when using some arcane file system then IMO you should have said that.

It is inconsistent in that it fails to update (very infrequent) intermittently
Reboots clear the issue, when it happens (also extreme slow down when it does. SMART is good, gobs of RAM)

Never happened to me, before or since I installed AU. But I never upgrade to new versions of Windows until Redmond deems it fit for Enterprise use. For AU that was Nov/Dec, I upgraded in January. The upgrade solved a bug with 1511's WU and Office (mix of 2007 & 2010), otherwise I might have waited longer.

I have seen something like you describe, but it wasn't a Windows problem. Some sort of interaction between media players and the xplorer² file manager I use. I had to logoff/logon to clear, eventually I was able overcame it by disabling audio and video previews in xplorer² - which I didn't really want anyway. The xplorer² guy blamed Windows, but he did provide the registry entries to include/exclude file types from preview.

Sound advice IMHO. A system should never "assume", but guide the user.

About the lazyness of windows, I'm using still Win7 so my windows experiences can be quite different, perhaps even cause that strange date/time behavior I have seen. As long as it only happens to me, it will function as a trigger to keep me sharp
