Beta feature is buggy. Who'd'a thunk it?

Bugs aside, it really needs a UI toggle somewhere like the Reading settings near the touch area settings. Right now it's useless for anyone who switches between text and comics.

I don't think it's fair to even call it a beta feature. Kobo haven't announced it as such. It's only the hawk-eyed code scrutinizers in these forums (to whom I offer many thanks for efforts past, present & future) who spotted it in the first place.

It's probably more like a pre-alpha feature. It may arrive fully-fledged some day or it might sink without trace. I think it's encouraging that Kobo have picked up on the fact that some users would like it and have made some tentative steps to look at it.

After updating the latest 4.3.8842 firmware every time I power up my KA1 it now displays a welcome splash screen describing new changes to the menu.
Even though I select 'Got It' at the bottom of the splash screen it still appears after I power on the reader again
Am I missing a setting here or is it a bug?

That depends. Have you applied either patch to force the home screen you want?

No, I haven't used any patches and after reading the patch thread since seeing your reply I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about trying it either!

I had more thought that I had missed a simple 'do not show' again tick box.
It's only slightly annoying I can tolerate it for the while, maybe it will be gone at the next update.

My reply was to ask if maybe the patch had an effect on the KA1. But obviously not. The patches are very safe. There's no reason not to use them if you want.

Nope. Kobo is not ADDING Overdrive to any reader but the Aura One.

The older readers never had Overdrive so no need to remove it. However, if you have a KA1 and borrow a book on it, it is then available to your other Kobo ereaders and, possibly, their iOS and Android apps in the future.

so if you want Overdrive on the Older Devices you have to buy the KA1 first, now that's what i call an Excellent Marketing Ploy.

No, if you want to read books borrowed using Overdrive on the other devices, you need to use a KA1 to connect your OD account with your Kobo account.

And yes it was a marketing ploy. A common one made when releasing a new product. What we don't know is whether Kobo will extend the full OD function to the other devices. I'll be surprised if they don't extend it to some of the other devices, but I won't be to surprised if they don't extend it to all of them. And by that I mean I would expect the H2O to get it, but not the Mini. And probably not the Touch or Glo.
