There's much here I would absolutely love to read, among both the fully nominated and the not-yet. I hope a few more make it to the vote.

I nominate book 1 of The Forsyte Saga, The Man of Property, by John Galsworthy.

I did mean to suggest just Man of Property. But having read it, I can't imagine not going on! (Not to worry, for those who don't know it; the first book is fine as a stand-alone.)

Also, here's an Audible link for the David Case narration of the first volume. Again, there are multiple versions if you have someone you prefer, though I find that hard to imagine, David Case being one of my favourite narrators of all time.

He's pretty much in a dead heat for first place, for me.

Come on, folks, a little love for the Forsyte Saga. Issybird is right, this is a compelling read, and a worthy selection.

I am using my last nod to nominate The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. This is a classic and a very good read.

H.G. Wells's science fiction classic, the first novel to explore the possibilities of intelligent life from other planets, it still startling and vivid nearly after a century after its appearance, and a half-century after Orson Wells's infamous 1938 radio adaptation. The daring portrayal of aliens landing on English soil, with its themes of interplanetary imperialism, technological holocaust and chaos, is central to the career of H.G. Wells, who died at the dawn of the atomic age. The survival of mankind in the face of "vast and cool and unsympathetic" scientific powers spinning out of control was a crucial theme throughout his work. Visionary, shocking and chilling, The War Of The Worlds has lost none of its impact since its first publication in 1898.

No kidding! And he thirded two that I will likely vote for. Both have been the basis for major BBC/PBS Series, and both have really good Audible versions, should you want/need to listen to the book. Forsyte has David Case as the narrator, and Cranford has Nadia May (Wanda McCaddon). These are two of the all time great narrators. If either one wins, I'll very likely listen rather than read, just because of my current circumstances.
