K4NT Screen is messed up after dropping to ground
i accidentally dropped my kindle 4 NT onto ground, now the screen is all messed up (see attached pic). it's broken to three areas. top half is blank, and the right side display screen saver, only lower half display text. Screen isn't damaged though.

any way to fix it?

You photo looks like a classic case of a broken e-ink substrate inside the screen. It is quite fragile.

It is possible to replace the screen, but it will probably cost more than the kindle is worth.

thanks, looks like replacing screen is not a viable solution.

what would be a good e-reader replacement for K4NT?

don't need anything fancy except:
1. long battery time
2. a tougher screen than K4NT

Ok, if you want a device for reading that won't break when dropped or shouldn't break when dropped, then you need paper books. All devices have the potential to break if dropped.
Now if you have a good budget, any reader or device will work. Go to Otterbox and buy a case. Note, they are heavy and expensive but should protect your device.

What's your budget?
If you have the money, spring for the Oasis.
My brother recently upgraded from a k4nt [black] to a paperwhite3 and he's pretty pleased with it. I'm not a fan of touchscreen, but at less than half of an Oasis, well...

And the lighting is a nice.

Currently any eInk screen (except the $$$ plastic substrate 13.3" ones) is going to be just as fragile. All of them use a thin glass backplane/substrate which can break if dropped just right or subjected to any kind of twisting force.

What kind of cover did you have it in? I've dropped a number of Kindles and never had a problem. One I dropped I made a grab for and shot it across the bathroom and into a tile wall at warp speed. That one I broke even though it was in the Amazon Kindle cover.

hehe, i didn't have a cover on at the time it got dropped

last year, i dropped something onto the front screen, causing a black smear appearing near the impact area. this time, it's dropped onto the floor.

Yes, the Voyage has a glass front as opposed to plastic on most other devices. All eInk screens (for the most part) have the thin glass substrate though. This is what usually breaks. The Voyage's glass front may help with any kind of direct pressure put on the screen breaking the substrate (like something pressing against the screen when carried in a bag), I'm not sure.

i got another k4nt to replace the one i broke - not a big fan of touch screen.

however now i'm afraid to take it anywhere i go since i learned how the fragile e-ink screen is.

Just don't drop it. You should be fine. Anything with glass is susceptible to breaking if you drop it. Be it an ereader, tablet, laptop, tv or dishes.
