In case you are correct I am reverting back, obviously the software isn't ready to be released fully yet. I have had some random freezes so that explains it.

Also those of us who have the new home screen via this site, how would Kobo know?
Which home screen you get has nothing to do with how you install the firmware. It will be something done during the first sync after the upgrade. And that will be recorded on the Kobo servers. It does mean if you used a fake email address, Kobo can't contact you for your opinion.

Also, the survey could happen on the device. Maybe after a certain time it will pop up a survey or something and collect the opinions that way.

I personally am very happy with the new home screen but for those that aren't i can only suggest you report your unhappiness to Kobo via email. They will probably take as much notice as Amazon do.
Yes, email, phone, Twitter, Facebook, or whatever everyone's favourite contact method is.

He meant that after adding the entry to the config file, he had to power cycle the device for it to take affect. If you add the option to the config file, it stays in effect until you remove it.

The new night mode is interesting. Night mode is one of two reasons why I use Koreader, the other being the statistics plugin so I can see how long my reading session was. It'd be nice if it was switchable in reading settings as with Koreader.

Has anyone else noticed a decline in touch accuracy with KA1? It improved with one of the 3.19.x releases and it appears to be back to being as bad as it was, possibly worse. When trying to select the items at the bottom of the screen (e.g. <->) I have to touch well to the left of the actual icon. Anyone else getting this?

The KA1 started with a 3.20.x release. There never was a 3.19.x release for the KA1.

I wonder if this means if you get the alternative you don't want, you can factory reset, re-upgrade and see what happens - rolling the dice? Or if it means you'd need to use a different Kobo account to do that?

Either way, I think it's good practice for companies to inform users before removing significant features. Especially when calling it an "upgrade".

I've restored now and have the old home screen but on 4.3.8842. I'm okay with that. I've never had issues updating through the links on here before but maybe this is one update i'll wait officially for.

I did a factory reset, got the new firmware but the old home screen. I used the same account which is a valid email address.

I do think its bad form to do any kind of testing like this, if kobo want to do usability testing with real customers they should ask for volunteers.

I don't suppose there's a hidden setting in the config file that controls if you get the old or new home screen? Has anyone looked?

My reading stats have gone crazy. Total hours read has increased from about 5250 hours to 6788 hours since I installed 4.3.8842.

Edit: Each time I open and close a book it adds about 200 a random number of hours to the total.

Edit2: But after a sync (which takes 10 minutes) the total reverts to its correct value.

Firmware update 4.3.8842

"Long time forum listener...first time caller". A very quick thank-you to davidfor in particular for years of assistance with my own eReader solutions via questions by the rest of all of you. Thanks DF!

Now, Firmware update 4.3.8842 (Can only speak for my Glo HD):
  • I updated after a factory reset (just coincidence as I was cleaning up the entire Calibre library and intended on a "fresh" install anyway)
  • Transfer from Calibre to Glo HD much quicker
  • Processing by Glo HD afterwards much quicker
  • Series Sort in Library and Collections working perfectly (this is worth the upgrade alone IMO)
  • Metadata transfer from Calibre to Glo HD FAILED for both std. and extended drivers. Problem solved once I checked "Attempt to support newer firmware" option. (I'm assuming KG and you 3rd party wizards will address this next Calbre cycle or sooner...thx from all of us in advance - again)
  • Home screen was only "half full" as some users have mentioned - HOWEVER, after normal use it has re-populated to it's pre-upgrade state...no change to the Glo HD's home screen from before - it is full with nothing new
  • All tiles can be dismissed (removed) if desired...nothing locked to home screen
  • For Kobo Utilities users, any "hidden" tiles (Web Browser, Unblock It, Solitaire, Sudoku, Word Scramble, Chess and Sketch Pad) can still be added to Home Screen as usual without issue if desired - but:
  • Chess still doesn't work (as usual) and Sketch Pad no longer gives a blank screen to draw on...it appears over top of the home screen - which makes it useless. I never used it anyhow since it created image files that had to be manually deleted from the Glo HD anyhow)
  • The Toggle Full Screen (cfg mod) also works as usual and is still found on Pg1 of Reading Settings
  • Finally (out of Calibre) Series and all Custom Collections transfer flawlessly including deleting empty collections folders.

From a Glo HD perspective, overall a worthwhile upgrade due to the Sort feature with no issues so far. No Home Screen change for me though.
