Sadly, the change did not make it to the CBZ viewer, (I would immagine the comic/manga readers are most affected),, but it's nice to see this long standing deficiency get addressed.
Easy fix. Use Calibre to convert CBZ to ePub.

I've updated the metatadata on my device (Kobo Aura H2O) both from Calibre's device and Kobo Utilities drop down menus and unplugged and replugged my device in several times in the hopes that that would sort it. It always has in the past as far as I can tell.

Is this possibly related to the new firmware or should I raise a separate question for it, do you think?
I can't think that it is related to the firmware update, but I haven't actually run the metadata update for a few weeks. I'll test tonight to see what happens.

But, have you tried restarting the device? The updates are made to the database directly. The device uses memory structures that have come from the database. Sometimes you need to restart the device to force the database to be reread.

I'm not a fan. I miss the stats tile and seeing my finished books with the annotation info. I use the latter a lot to fix problems in the books.

I also don't like that they are taking close to half the screen for advertising. I don't actually think that helps them. Either I buy books from them, or I don't. If I don't, then it's just wasted space. If I do, then I go looking for them when need them. As I do buy books from them, having an accessible link, and the recommodations/related tiles show up was OK. But, I could remove them when I finished looking at them. And they occupied the same amount of space as one of my books.

Series sort is nice, haven't checked if it's there for collections as well but I presume it is.
It's in the collections. It isn't in the search results.

I prefer the Kindle myself, it's white, my Kobo is more yellow. Both are good screens, much better in real life than compared to the photos.

What's the best way to tell Kobo we prefer the old home screen to this new home screen?

Experience tells me once a company does a change like this and rolls it out there's no going back.

Ironically I thought Amazon made their UI changes to look more like Kobo, and then Kobo goes to change it to look more like Amazon's

Since they are testing with one group of people on the old homescreen and another group on the new one, they are probably going to decide which one to keep based on which group buys the most books from their device, or something like that.

Vote with your wallet.

A lot of my tiles on my old screens are to various collections and that's useful to me. And I really don't want to be marketed to; it's one of the things I dislike about Amazon.

Better still, use a real image conversion utility like ImageMagick to desaturate the images, scale to the native resolution of the target device, and apply an appropriate gamma correction. For example:

Code:
mogrify -verbose -strip -format jpg -quality 85% \
 -fuzz 1% -trim +repage \
 -rotate "90>" \
 -resize 1404x1872 \
 -type Grayscale -level 0%,100%,0.6 *

Another nice little change,, the search bar on the home screen now remembers what you last used it for.

Yes. It has quirks with a in-between book, i.e. In Death 28.5 does not sort between 28 and 29 for example.
